Doonbeg (Irish: An Dún Beag, meaning 'small fort')
Originally the name was Aberdon which literally means "at the mouth of the Don", as it is situated by the mouth of the river Don
Turnberry means “the castle built on the stormy sharp rocky promontory.” Robert the Bruce, crowned King of Scotland in 1306, was born in Turnberry Castle. In 1307, Bruce launched the fight to rid Scotland of the English from nearby Arran by retaking Turnberry Castle.
