Wealthy Maine lawyer and Democrat candidate for governor pleads guilty to child porn charges

The plea deal calls for Cutler to serve nine months in jail for four counts of possessing sexually explicit material of a child under 12, and he is registered as a sexual offender for life.

A wealthy and accomplished attorney from Maine, Eliot Cutler, who was active for much of his life in Democratic Party politics, has pleaded guilty to possession of thousands of images of child sex abuse.

"It marked a remarkable fall for a man who once served as an aide to the late Sen. Edmund Muskie, as the top energy and environmental adviser to then-President Jimmy Carter, and launched a powerful environmental law firm in Washington, D.C.," according to the Associated Press.

Cutler came close to being elected governor of Maine in 2010, but lost to Republican Paul LePage that year, and lost by a much larger margin in 2014.

"My behavior helped to support an industry built upon their abuse, and I hope with all my heart that they can find healing and dignity," Cutler said.

The plea deal calls for Cutler to serve nine months in jail out of a 4-year sentence plus six years on probation for four counts of possessing sexually explicit material of a child under 12.

The 76-year-old Cutler expressed remorse and made no excuses for his addiction. He said he would devote his remaining years to redemption.

He told the judge that he had neglected opportunities to reach out for help and was "embarrassed, ashamed, and deeply, deeply sorry" for his actions. "I failed to meet my obligations to myself, to my family, to my friends and to civilized society," he added.

The investigation into Cutler began with a tip in December of 2021, according to the AP. The tip came from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which informed Maine State Police that someone in Maine had either downloaded or uploaded a single illegal image.

"Between 2014 and 2021, prosecutors say Cutler downloaded more than 80,000 images of children younger than 12 engaged in often violent and unusual sexual acts, according to the agreement," according to CentralMaine.com.

Cutler then spent some time in a residential treatment center for sex offenders. His attorney said Cutler never engaged in inappropriate conduct with children and that the likelihood of recidivism was "virtually nil."

That didn't satisfy advocates for child sexual abuse victims. Paul Kendrick, for example, said Cutler’s actions supported sexual violence against children. "The otherwise healthy lives of victims of child pornography are wrecked forever," he said.

Cutler sold his oceanfront mansion in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, for $7.55 million in 2021 to a nephew of former President George H.W. Bush. Following his arrest, he sold another home that he owned in Maine.

Judge Robert Murray said he is hopeful that something good might come from the shame that is part of Cutler’s fall from grace.

"The good which comes from this shame depends entirely upon you and how you respond. You’ve alluded to that in your remarks. I can't measure your sincerity in that regard. That will only be proven with the passage of time," Murray said.

Police say the republican demonstrators were conspiring to “cause a public nuisance”

Police officers arrested a number of anti-monarchy demonstrators and seized protest placards ahead of the coronation of King Charles III on Saturday. The protesters say they want to be able to choose their head of state.

London’s Metropolitan Police said on Saturday morning that “a significant police operation” was underway in central London. Shortly afterwards, the force announced that it had arrested four people “on suspicion of conspiracy to cause a public nuisance,” and another three “on suspicion of possessing articles to cause criminal damage.” The first group were found in possession of “lock-on devices,” police said.

“Public nuisance” was made a criminal offense under controversial protest laws brought in last year, while “locking on” – a tactic popularized by climate activists – was criminalized when a separate public order bill came into force earlier this week.

Republic, an anti-monarchy group, said that its leader and five key organizers were among those arrested, and that hundreds of the group’s placards were seized by police. The Alliance of European Republican Movements – which opposes monarchies across the continent – posted a video to social media showing Republic’s leader, Graham Smith, being detained.

Other photos and videos show officers seizing bundles of placards reading ‘Not My King’ and taking banners off protesters at Trafalgar Square, where hundreds of demonstrators had gathered to oppose the coronation of Britain’s new monarch. As Charles III was crowned inside Westminster Abbey, the crowd at Trafalgar Square chanted “down with the crown” and “get a real job.”

“Instead of a coronation we want an election. Instead of Charles we want a choice. It’s that simple,” Republic tweeted before the ceremony began.

Trafalgar Square was a symbolic location for the protest. Aside from its location along the coronation procession route, the square is home to a statue of King Charles I, who was executed in 1649 after the English Civil War. England was briefly a republic after his death, before the monarchy was restored in 1660 with the coronation of his son, Charles II.

Elsewhere in London, police arrested “around 20” climate protesters affiliated with the ‘Just Stop Oil’ group, the group said. Claiming that the protesters had no plans of disrupting the coronation and simply planned on revealing t-shirts with the group’s name written on them, a Just Stop Oil spokesperson described the police operation as “a dystopian nightmare.”

FDA: More than 500K COVID Tests Should be Thrown Out Due to Bacteria Contamination that Can Cause Illness

If you think you might be unwell, a COVID-19 test can help. But there are those that could truly get you ill.

Over 500,000 home COVID-19 tests are being recalled due to the presence of possibly dangerous bacteria in the liquid solution.

In a recall announcement made this week, SD Biosensor, Inc. said that more than 40 batches of its Pilot COVID-19 At-Home Tests were affected.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has stated that roughly 500,000 of the recalled tests were delivered to CVS Health and around 16,000 were sent to Amazon.

The contaminated kits may also produce false test results.

The FDA stressed that none of the recalled lots were distributed through federal testing programs or through COVID.gov.

The affected tests can be identified by the lot number on the outer packaging and should be thrown in the trash. If you have one of the recalled tests, you are urged not to pour the liquid down any household drains.

The potentially harmful bacteria was found in the test tube with liquid inside (pouch 2 of the kits), according to the recall announcement. It notes that while the liquid is contained in a sealed tube, direct exposure to the liquid through misuse or spillage could potentially lead to serious illness.

Additionally, the FDA said the contamination may impact the test performance and cause false-negative or false-positive results.

Consumers can see a full list of recalled lots below or look up their test kit’s lot number on this website, which will indicate whether a particular test kit may be used or should be properly disposed of.

Consumers may also contact the Roche Customer Support Center at 1-866-987-6243 and select option 1. If a consumer’s test kit is from an unaffected lot, it is safe to continue using tests from that kit in accordance with the instructions for use, which can be found in the test kit or at go.roche.co m/covid-home-test.

Billionaire Says He’ll Back DeSantis, Suggests One Part Of His Campaign Needs To Change

Tech billionaire Peter Thiel said he would support Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis if he announces his 2024 candidacy for president but said he has to change one part of his campaign.

“I think DeSantis would make a terrific president if he’s the Republican nominee. I will strongly support him in 2024,” Thiel told Bari Weiss this week during her podcast. “But I do worry that focusing on the woke issue as ground zero is not quite enough.”

Thiel, the co-founder of PayPal and Palantir, then claimed that “the focus on identity politics, on the woke religion, is probably a distraction from stagnation. It’s a distraction from economics.”

As governor, DeSantis has targeted what he has described as the creep of left-wing ideology into civic life and namely stripped Disney of some of its legal protections after the entertainment giant issued a statement opposing a bill that DeSantis supported. The bill, signed into law by the governor, would prevent teachers from the “instruction” or “discussion” of sexual orientation and gender identity with young children.

And on Wednesday, Florida’s legislature passed a bill that bans teachers from addressing students with transgender pronouns and barring the funding for diversity programs in colleges.

DeSantis rose to GOP stardom, in part, due to him going after Marxist-inspired critical race theory as well as diversity, equity, and inclusion training.

But Thiel claimed that DeSantis’s focus on the subject “can be both important and a distraction at the same time” and stressed that economic issues should be the focus. “It’s a distraction from the way in which the younger generation in the U.S. is probably gonna have a hard time getting the same standard of living as their parents,” he said.

Despite that, Thiel said that he believes it is “necessary to defeat the woke mind virus,” echoing statements made by Twitter CEO Elon Musk, another co-founder of PayPal.

Thiel appeared to be responding to recent reports from Reuters and other news outlets that he would stay out of the 2024 GOP race due to Republicans’ focus on cultural topics.

Thiel’s comments come as at least two other billionaire donors have soured on DeSantis. For instance, billionaire Thomas Peterffy said in a recent interview with the Financial Times that he was ceasing donations to the governor due to his perceived opinion on abortion and other issues.

Singer-songwriter Sam Smith announced that he will be cancelling his performance in Tel Aviv, Israel after succumbing to pressure from pro-Palestinian activists.

The "Unholy" singer was scheduled to perform at the "Summer in the City Festival" in Tel Aviv at the end of May, according to i24News. Smith's production company blamed the cancellation on "unforeseen technical and logistical problems."

Those "unforseen" circumstances that production is referring to is the recent pressure campaign put forth by pro-Palestinian activists on social media to get Smith to cancel his concert in Israel. Activists created a special hashtag called, "#SamDontGo", and flooded Twitter with anti-Israel propaganda which included images of Israeli activist detaining Palestinian youth, and holding Palestinian families at gunpoint.

A petition signed by more than 11,000 was sent to Smith demanding that he reconsider playing at the festival, in which he was going to promote his new album "Gloria."

On Saturday, anti-corruption attorney Thomas Renz in Ohio made headlines by suggesting that fake doctors and nurses may have been behind the COVID-19 murder-for-money scheme in hospitals.

“DEVELOPING: This is the most important developing story in the country. The COVID-19 murder for money scheme in the hospitals appears, in many cases, to have been carried out by fake doctors and nurses,” Renz wrote on Twitter.

His statement follows the arrest of over two dozen people by the Department of Justice (DOJ) in connection with a plan to sell fake nursing degrees and transcripts from legitimate institutions.

“The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG) and our law enforcement partners launched a multi-state coordinated law enforcement action to apprehend individuals engaged in a scheme to sell false and fraudulent nursing degree diplomas and transcripts,” according to the news release.

“The enforcement action resulted in the execution of search warrants in Delaware, New York, New Jersey, Texas, and Florida, and 25 individuals being charged for their involvement in the fraud scheme.”

“The alleged scheme involved the selling of fake and fraudulent nursing degree diplomas and transcripts obtained from accredited Florida-based nursing schools to aspiring Registered Nurse (RN) and Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse (LPN/VN) candidates. The individuals who acquired the bogus nursing credentials used them to qualify to sit for the national nursing board exam. Upon successful completion of the board exam, the nursing applicants became eligible to obtain licensure in various states to work as an RN or a LPN/VN. Once licensed, the individuals were then able to obtain employment in the health care field.”

More than 7,600 fraudulent nursing degrees were granted by three nursing schools in South Florida. These institutions were Siena College in Broward County, Palm Beach School of Nursing in Palm Beach County, and Sacred Heart International Institute in Broward County. These schools are now closed.

According to DOJ, each defendant faces up to 20 years in prison.

“Not only is this a public safety concern, it also tarnishes the reputation of nurses who actually complete the demanding clinical and course work required to obtain their professional licenses and employment,” said U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida Markenzy Lapointe, who added that “a fraud scheme like this erodes public trust in our health care system.”
