Ukraine cancels traditional holiday celebrating defeat of Nazis

The Russian Foreign Ministry has called President Vladimir Zelensky a “traitor” for proposing to shift Victory Day to May 8.

Ukraine may break the Soviet tradition of celebrating Victory Day on May 9 after President Vladimir Zelensky suggested holding commemorative ceremonies on May 8 instead. The idea was quickly slammed by officials in Moscow.

In a message on his Telegram channel on Monday, Zelensky explained that his proposal was based on the fact that it was “on May 8 that most nations of the world remember the greatness of the victory over the Nazis.” He added that the German Third Reich’s unconditional surrender was signed on that day.

Zelensky said he had submitted a bill to the country’s parliament which, if passed, would officially designate May 8 as the ‘Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in the Second World War of 1939-1945’.

As for May 9, which is when Victory Day was traditionally celebrated in the Soviet Union, Zelensky declared this would now be observed as Europe Day, as it is in the European Union. He expressed confidence that the changes would help align Ukraine with Europe and return to “honest history without ideological admixtures to our state.”

What’s behind Syria’s return to the Arab League?

BEIRUT (AP) — The Arab League’s decision to re-admit Syria after 12 years of ostracization was a significant symbolic victory for Damascus, part of a larger regional realignment and an indication of the United States’ waning role, analysts say.

But it may not immediately bring the reconstruction dollars that Syrian President Bashar Assad is hoping for, they say. Nor is it likely to bring the changes Syria’s neighbors want, such as an agreement on refugee returns and moves to reduce drug trafficking.

Syria is returning to the Arab fold even though there is no sign on the horizon of a resolution to the country’s uprising-turned-civil war, now in its 13th year. The long-stalemated conflict has killed nearly a half million people since March 2011 and displaced half of the country’s pre-war population of 23 million. Multiple attempts to mediate a resolution have failed.

The league approved Syria’s readmission at a closed-door meeting in Cairo on Sunday. It means Assad can attend the league’s summit in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on May 19, further cementing his move out of pariah status.

WHAT IS THE ARAB LEAGUE AND WHY WAS SYRIA SUSPENDED FROM IT?

The Arab League is a 22-member organization founded in 1945 to promote regional cooperation and resolve disputes. But it is widely seen as toothless and has long struggled to implement conflict-resolution efforts, especially in the recent era of wars in Syria, Yemen and Libya and a bitter diplomatic rift between Gulf monarchies and Qatar years ago.

New York City suburbs furious at Mayor Adams' plans to relocate migrants in their hotels

"They’re basically dumping them into a county where we’re not prepared for them," one county official said.

Officials in New York City suburbs are strongly opposed to Mayor Eric Adams' plans to relocate migrants to hotels in their towns.

Adams announced his plans Friday for New York to pay to house about 300 migrant men in two hotels in Rockland and Orange counties – in an attempt to ease the burden of hosting the city's growing number of illegal migrants, which would include those buses from Texas.

Less than a day later Adams announced the plan, Rockland officials began trying to stop Adams' plans, The New York Times reported.

"It felt like they were trying to do a Friday night drop," Orangetown town supervisor Teresa Kenney said.

Kenny, whose town is in Rockland County, said she learned about the plan hours before Adams announced it.

"I feel like the mayor called me to check a box so he couldn’t be criticized for not talking to us."

Rockland County Executive Ed Day, a Republican, on Saturday issued a state of emergency order stating that municipalities could not transport or house migrants in his country without permission.

"Whatever we need to do to stop this, we will do," Day said Sunday. He also said that the county is prepared to issue up to $2,000 fines per violation each day to any hotel that takes in migrants through the program.

"They’re basically dumping them into a county where we’re not prepared for them," he also said.

Rockland is the first New York county outside of the city to issue an emergency order to tackle the migrant crisis, New York State Association of Counties Executive Director Stephen Acquario said.

"This is a homelessness problem, and it’s largely the fault of the federal government," he also said. "And here we have the lowest unit of government cleaning up the mess of the United States."

Orange County is also considering issuing a state of emergency to block Adams' plans, county executive Steve Neuhaus, a Republican, said.

Andrey Sushentsov: How the EU’s ‘new’ Eastern members have taken control of the bloc

Badly thought-out expansion has cost Germany its previous leadership of the organization and left the tail wagging the dog

The Ukrainian crisis is giving rise to new strategic shifts. Alongside the shift away from a US-dominated world order, the conflict shows the emergence of a new balance of power in Europe that eludes the comprehension of Western analysts.

At the heart of the new strategic situation in Europe is an “inflation of the influence” of Eastern European states that was unimaginable thirty years ago.

In its current form, the European Union, whose development – both economic and political – has been driven for almost seventy years by the countries of Western Europe, has essentially lost its sovereignty. At the beginning of the 1990s, at the height of post-Cold War integration plans, there was a real possibility of forming a full European confederation: Western European countries were thinking about their own defense policy, separate from the US, and were planning to go down the road of creating some form of United States of Europe. This would have greatly strengthened Western European autonomy, not only vis-à-vis the Americans but also in regards to Russia and China. This unique opportunity was never seized.
