Multiple foreign leaders to attend Victory Parade in Moscow

Several former Soviet republics are sending heads of government to the Red Square event

Presidents and prime ministers of seven countries that used to be part of the Soviet Union have been invited to join Russian President Vladimir Putin for the Victory Day parade on Tuesday morning, the Kremlin has announced.

Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan is already in Moscow, along with presidents of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan, Sadyr Japarov of Kyrgyzstan, Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan, and Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan, according to Russian media.

Turkmenistan’s Serdar Berdymuhamedov was invited, but it was unclear whether he would come to Moscow or celebrate Victory Day in Dushanbe instead.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Monday evening that the leaders will join Putin for an “informal breakfast,”followed by the traditional military parade, scheduled to start at 10 am local time. A joint wreath-laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is also on the agenda.

Putin will give a speech before the parade begins. The Kremlin has not provided any excerpts from the address.

Tuesday’s parade will mark 78 years since Nazi Germany surrendered to the Soviet Union in the Second World War. By tradition, the ceremony opens with the guard of honor carrying the banner raised atop the Reichstag on May 2, 1945, the battle flag of the 150th Infantry Division.

Dress rehearsals for the parade were held over the weekend and on Monday. Russian media have reported that units involved in the ongoing military operation in Ukraine will be featured among those on display, just as they were last May.

(Putin will have extreme security tomorrow, otherwise WWIII will commence, and it won’t be restrained)

US threatened WWII vets over Victory Day parade – envoy

American veterans were reportedly told their passports would be canceled if they traveled to Russia

The US government had intimidated some veterans of WWII who wanted to fly to Russia for the Victory Day parade in Moscow, Russian ambassador to Washington Anatoly Antonov said on Monday. (Isn’t there very few of them left? Is this story true?)

US officials blocked the dreams of US veterans to reunite with their Russian comrades in arms for the second year in a row, Antonov said, even threatening to cancel their passports if they flew to Russia.

“We want the American soldiers to know that Russia is proud of their contribution to the common victory. The hostile US policy will not undermine the spirit of camaraderie during the Great Patriotic War. We consider it our duty to defend the truth about these heroes,” the ambassador said.

Antonov also pointed out the rising Russophobia in the US, which he said was being encouraged by the government. He accused the US media of completely ignoring the anniversary of Nazi defeat, in order to avoid giving any credit to the USSR.

“Brazen attempts are being made to falsify the facts about WWII, the decisive contribution of the Red Army to the defeat of fascism is ignored, and the Soviet Union is excluded from the list of winners. At the same time, the role of the US and the UK is undeservedly advertised,” the ambassador said.

He also called a “disgrace” and “mockery of history and common sense” that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky is being celebrated around Europe even as the government in Kiev glorifies the Nazi collaborators such as Stepan Bandera and his movement.

“We call on the American authorities to change their minds and stop indulging the Nazis,”Antonov said. “We must be honest with the fallen heroes. Stop distorting history. Encouraging neo-Nazism and Russophobia is unacceptable.”

The ambassador also noted that over the weekend, unknown vandals attacked Orthodox headstones at the Rock Creek cemetery in Washington. According to the local Russian parish priest, the attackers also desecrated the chapel, defacing the icon of St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco

(This doesn’t seem true, my Dad was a WWII vet and died at 80 years old in 2005, he was 28 when he returned, that would make the vets 93-98 years old or older. Anons help me understand this please.)

Julian Assange: Australian MPs urge US ambassador to end extradition bid

Independent MP Andrew Wilkie was ‘grateful’ for the opportunity to meet Caroline Kennedy to discuss broad concern for the WikiLeaks founder

Daniel Hurst Foreign affairs and defence correspondent

Mon 8 May 2023 20.00

Independent MP Andrew Wilkie, one of the co-chairs of the Bring Julian Assange Home Parliamentary Group, said they were “grateful for this opportunity” to meet with Kennedy to raise “the widespread concern in Australia about the ongoing attempts by the US to extradite Mr Assange to America”.

“In particular we impressed upon the ambassador the broad concern in the Australian parliament for Mr Assange, which was echoed clearly by both the prime minister and opposition leader last week when they said this matter had gone on long enough.”

Wilkie was joined at the meeting by the other co-chairs of the group – Josh Wilson (Labor), Bridget Archer (Liberal) and David Shoebridge (Greens) – along with the Labor MP Julian Hill.

Hill said the group “got a fair hearing and have again made clear that enough is enough and this needs a political resolution led by the United States”.

“We thank the ambassador for engaging directly, so she can convey the strength of the views right across the Australian parliament to Washington DC,” Hill said.

Assange, an Australian citizen, remains in Belmarsh prison in London as he fights a US attempt to extradite him to face charges in connection with the publication of hundreds of thousands of leaked documents about the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, as well as diplomatic cables.

The push to seek his release appears to have gained momentum since the 2022 election victory of Anthony Albanese, who has long been on the record as criticising the ongoing pursuit of Assange.

During a visit to the UK last week, the prime minister reiterated his view that “enough is enough” and that he was “concerned about Mr Assange’s mental health”. The opposition leader, Peter Dutton, agreed it had “gone on too long”.

In a sign of the government’s increasing attention to the case, the new Australian high commissioner to the UK, Stephen Smith, visited Assange in Belmarsh prison in early April.

Last month, 48 Australian MPs and senators – including 13 from the governing Labor party – wrote to US attorney general, Merrick Garland, to argue the extradition bid “set a dangerous precedent” for press freedom.

Their open letter said the charges – 17 counts under the Espionage Act and one count under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act – pertained to Assange’s actions “as a journalist and publisher” in publishing information “with evidence of war crimes, corruption and human rights abuses”.

Dust cloud discovered around one of sky’s brightest stars

High-resolution images from James Webb space telescope reveal two rings of debris around Fomalhaut

Astronomers have spotted an asteroid belt and an enormous dust cloud around one of the nearest and brightest stars in the night sky.

Known as Fomalhaut, the star lies 25 light years from Earth in the constellation of Piscis Austrinus, or the southern fish. Though best seen from the southern hemisphere, it can be viewed from a large part of the northern hemisphere, especially in the autumn. Its brightness and position mean it is still used for navigation.

Previous observations by the Hubble space telescope and other instruments showed the 440m-year-old Fomalhaut to be surrounded by dust and debris, but the images gave only a partial picture of the cosmic material circling the young star.

Now, high-resolution images from the James Webb space telescope have revealed the star’s surroundings in unprecedented detail. Beyond an extensive inner asteroid belt that swirls around the star is a second narrower ring of rock and rubble.

“What we see is the dust produced in collisions between planetesimals, which themselves are the long forgotten remnants of the formation of the planetary system itself,” said András Gáspár, lead author on the study at the University of Arizona.

Further out still from Fomalhaut is an outer ring of debris that resembles the solar system’s Kuiper belt, home to Pluto and the other dwarf planets, Eris, Haumea, and Makemake. It was in this outer ring that the astronomers spotted what they call the great dust cloud, which they suspect was produced when two space rocks more than 400 miles wide slammed into one another.

The scientists identified the new features in images taken by the mid-infrared instrument onboard the James Webb space telescope. The three nested belts and the gaps between them suggest that unseen planets are circling Fomalhaut and shaping the star system through their gravitational fields. “Planets as low in mass as Neptune are sufficient to carve the inner belts,” the authors write in Nature Astronomy.

I hope you appreciated this article. Before you move on, I was hoping you would consider taking the step of supporting the Guardian’s journalism.

From Elon Musk to Rupert Murdoch, a small number of billionaire owners have a powerful hold on so much of the information that reaches the public about what’s happening in the world. The Guardian is different. We have no billionaire owner or shareholders to consider. Our journalism is produced to serve the public interest – not profit motives.

And we avoid the trap that befalls much US media – the tendency, born of a desire to please all sides, to engage in false equivalence in the name of neutrality. While fairness guides everything we do, we know there is a right and a wrong position in the fight against racism and for reproductive justice. When we report on issues like the climate crisis, we’re not afraid to name who is responsible. And as a global news organization, we’re able to provide a fresh, outsider perspective on US politics – one so often missing from the insular American media bubble.

The Indictment

Kash Patel: Rod Rosenstein refused to investigate Bidan when the 2018 whistleblower came to them saying he had verifiable proof Bidan was being bribed as VP. Wray is doing the same thing today.

Frank Gaffney: "We are at war with the CCP, and it's a war that has been going on for decades"

Latest Polling Shows Commanding Trump GOP Primary Lead and Defeating Biden in ’24, Team Trump Organizing Ballot Harvesting Operation and Delegate Affirmations

May 8, 2023 | Sundance | 243 Comments

Several recent stories give an updated status on the current political dynamic. Despite the continued onslaught of media, lawfare and professional political institutions trying to tear down Donald Trump and the American restoration insurgency he represents, the large poll data shows President Trump gaining strength [ABC POLL]In a head-to-head matchup against Biden, Trump now leads 44% to 38%, and the shift in the polling continues favoring Donald Trump.

Why?

Two main factors.First, people are seeing the lies and manipulations created by aligned systems against Trump.

Second, perhaps more importantly, because peace, stability and economic prosperity were already demonstrated by President Trump’s policies.

There is a factual reference to Trump outcomes that eliminates the guesswork.

The corporate media are still trying to weaponize any issue in their attempt to remove support for Donald Trump, but their efforts are not working. Now, you are beginning to see reports of President Trump putting systems into place.

The Washington Times has a story aboutPresident Trump organizing ballot harvesting operations[SEE HERE], and Politico notes Team Trump is making background moves with key delegate contacts [See Here].

Most of the pearl-clutching about possible Trump legal issues are stimulated by people, media and donors who are supporting Ron DeSantis. The motive for the effort is transparent. Yes, the United States Government, DOJ and FBI are conducting weaponized operations against Donald Trump in order to remove the financial threat he represents to the owners of the institutions. However, as with the leftist arguments, most of the lawfare constructs are weak and built on fraud.

There is also a growing acceptance amid the DC chattering class that Donald Trump is not only going to win reelection, but he’s also going to come back to Washington DC with a double-sided battle axe to rip out the heart of the administrative/bureaucratic state. You see this increasing sensibility via endorsements from political operatives that are deeply enmeshed in the apparatus.

WASHINGTON DC – […] During that time, the former president has picked several prominent endorsements in Congress, including the support of National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Steve Daines (R-Mont.).

Republican senators and GOP strategists say Daines’s endorsement is a sign that Trump is viewed as the favorite to win the party’s presidential nomination in 2024.

They say the leader of the Senate Republican campaign arm wants to have a good working relationship with him to maximize the chances of winning back control of the Senate.

“I just think that his nomination is inevitable. I really do. He’s going to be the nominee. I’d be stunned if he’s not,” said one Republican senator who requested anonymity to discuss the primary and hasn’t yet endorsed a candidate.

“You’ve seen the numbers. I’ve talked to voters. People are beginning to recognize that. Steve Daines’s endorsement reflects that reality. He’s going to be the nominee, we want him to work with us,” the senator added. (read more)
