BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) — Police are preparing to arrest the hospitalized driver of an SUV that slammed into a crowd, killing eight people waiting for a bus Sunday outside amigrant shelterin the border city of Brownsville, Texas. At least 10 others were injured, authorities said.

With no bench at the unmarked city bus stop, some of the victims were sitting on the curb around 8:30 a.m. when the driver hit them, surveillance video from the Bishop Enrique San Pedro Ozanam Centershowed.

Brownsville police investigator Martin Sandoval, who confirmed the latest death Sunday evening, said police did not know whether the collision was intentional.

Shelterdirector Victor Maldonado said the SUV ran up the curb, flipped and continued moving for about 200 feet (60 meters). Some people walking on the sidewalk about 30 feet (9 meters) from the main group were also hit, Maldonado said.

Witnesses detained the driver as he tried to run away and held him until police arrived, he said.

“This SUV, a Range Rover, just ran the light that was about 100 feet (30 meters) away and just went through the people who were sitting there in the bus stop,” said Maldonado, who reviewed theshelter’s surveillance video.

Victims struck by the vehicle were waiting for the bus to return to downtown Brownsvilleafter spending the night at the overnight shelter, said Sister Norma Pimentel, executive director of Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley.

Brownsville has long been an epicenter for migration across the U.S.-Mexico border, and it has become a key location of interest for next week's end to pandemic-era border restrictions known asTitle 42.

The Ozanam shelteris the only overnight shelter in the city and manages the release of thousands of migrants from federal custody.

Maldonado said thecenterhad not received any threats before the crash, but they did afterward.

“I've had a couple of people come by the gate and tell the security guard that the reason this happened was because of us,” Maldonado said.

Thesheltercan hold 250, but many who arrive leave the same day. In the last several weeks, an uptick in border crossings prompted the city to declare an emergency as local, state and federal resources coordinated enforcement and humanitarian response.

“In the last two months, we’ve been getting 250 to 380 a day,” Maldonado said.

While theshelteroffers migrants transportation during the week, they also use the city’s public transportation.

St. Vincent Catholic Charities helps Lansing refugees

By DeAnna Giles Published: May. 8, 2023 at 5:39 PM EDT | Updated: 23 hours ago

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) -St. Vincent Catholic Charitiesis helping hundreds of refugees who now call Lansing home. Starting Monday, they’re hosting their furniture donation drive to help refugees.

“When they arrive in Lansing, in many cases they arrive with just one little bag. and we know that they will need literally everything,” said Veronika Parsamova.

Veronica Parsamova is an immigrant from Ukraine. With the help of donations, they’re providing refugees with new and gently used household essentials such as sofas, kitchen tables, new sheets, blankets and more.

Many refugees come to the states with language barriers or with no support.

“We are trying to make their houses as welcoming, as nice as possible,” said Parsamova. “It helps them to start their life over and the second thing is just donating to refugees. You are showing the welcoming face of the Lansing community.”

And now she’s helping others settle into their new life. “As a person who came here in America as an immigrant, I understand very well that it takes a lot of struggles. It takes a lot of knowledge education to get adjusted to this life,” said Parsamova.

“When a family walks into a home it provides comfort and dignity,” said Ali Pirich.

Ali Pirich also works atSt. Vincent Charities. She says they’re anticipating more than 300 refugees this year, in Lansing alone.

“That breaks down to resettling about 40 individuals each month,” said Pirich.

They both agree that it takes a community to help refugees feel welcome.

“In a couple of years when they are American citizens, they will remember the kindness and generosity of the community and they will think oh now it’s my turn. now it’s my turn to help somebody who is starting their life here in Lansing,” said Parsamova.

A city that hundreds of refugees call home.St. Vincent Catholic Charitieswill be accepting donations until May 12th. They also provide refugees with other resources, so they can become self-sufficient.

‘We’re going to do our best’: Uncertainty looms for San Antonio migrant center ahead ofTitle 42end

Molly Smith Staff writer May 9, 2023

Antonio Fernandez, Catholic Charities president and CEO, talks about how the center has adapted to shifting numbers of asylum seekers, and what he expects in May, whenTitle 42ends while giving a tour at the center.

Dozens of people milled in front of the Centro de Bienvenida early Monday afternoon, standing under the building’s awnings or sitting under small canopy tents to escape the sun. Temperatures were already in the mid-80s and were expected to climb a few degrees higher.

With 700 people already inside, the most fire code allows,Catholic Charities of San Antoniocouldn’t let anyone else in until others left to catch a bus or a flight to their next — and often final — destination in their arduous journey to the United States.

The day was a preview for what’s to come when Title 42 is expected to end Thursday, increasing the number of migrants crossing the Texas-Mexico border and passing through San Antonio once released from U.S. Border Patrol custody.

“We don’t know what to expect, but we’re going to do our best,” said J. Antonio Fernandez,Catholic Charities of San Antonio president and CEO. Since March 2020, the U.S. government has used a public health rule called Title 42 to immediately expel hundreds of thousands of migrants from select countries back to Mexico or their home countries without letting them apply for asylum. The rule will no longer be in force at 10:59 p.m. CST Thursday when the national COVID public health emergency ends.Federal officials estimate tens of thousands of people could cross the border in the weeks ahead.

“The border will be busy for a while in the short-term,” U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Laredo, said Friday at a news conference held at the center on the city’s near North Side. He declined to share figures given to him by Border Patrol officials.

With only so much space inside the 71,000-square foot facility, which once was a CPS Energy customer service center, Fernandez is in talks with four area hotels to lease rooms.

Although he prefers to purchase airline tickets for people traveling to far-away cities like Chicago, New York or Miami, he’s considering leasing charter buses to more quickly transport large groups out of San Antonio at once…

Catholic Charitiesrecently capped the daily amount spent on airline tickets to $100,000, a decision driven by uncertainty surrounding the speed of federal reimbursement. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has been slow to allocate funding to the organization, Fernandez said. “We don’t have a lot of money left as we speak,” he said Monday.

FEMAon Friday promised nearly $32 million in “expedited” funding toCatholic Charities of San Antonio, but Fernandez doesn’t know when, or in what increments, these dollars will be dispersed. Some of that money will also be used for its office in Del Rio.

A representative from San Antonio Congressman Joaquin Castro’s office said the disbursement will be made in “one lump sum.”

“We expect to get further information on timing in the coming days and weeks,” said Communications Director Geneva Kropper.

San Antonio was also awarded close to $4.7 million in FEMA funds. The city pays for leasing the building the migrant center occupies, in addition to maintenance and security costs.

It’s also usedfederal dollarsto bus migrants from the center to Austin’s airport, which has more direct flight options. The two cities launched the busing program in January and had only sent one busload of migrants to Austin until Thursday when the second bus departed. City officials previously said they could bus up to 120 migrants a day to Austin if needed.

No one from the city was made available for an interview. In a statement, spokesperson Laura Mayes said the current situation “is not sustainable and continued funding from the federal government is uncertain.”

The City, in collaboration with Catholic Charities, will continue to operate the center at capacity for as long as it is able,” the statement continued, “yet withoutfederal funding, its long-term operations is unknown.”

Catholic Charities Under Siege

House Republicans and TX bearing down hard

by Kristine Christlieb • ChurchMilitant.com • December 17, 2022 2 Comments

The months-long surge of illegal immigrants on America's southern border has gone beyond crisis mode, and Catholic Charities has been at the center of it.

Church Militant's Kristine Christlieb briefs us on how the Catholic nonprofit may be profiting illegally from the migration catastrophe.

As Church Militant and the Lepanto Institute have been reporting for years, illegal immigration is a cash cow for nonprofit giant Catholic Charities.

Four Republican members of Congress plus the state of Texas are hot on the charity's trail, both claiming some of its immigration activities may be illegal.

Wednesday, in a letter addressed to the organization's Virginia headquarters, Congressmen Lance Gooden and Jake Ellzey of Texas, Andy Biggs of Arizona and Tom Tiffany of Wisconsin ordered the charity to "preserve all information related to any expenditures submitted for reimbursement from the federal government related to migrants encountered at the southern border."

The Congressmen promise an investigation, saying, "Catholic Charities is violating federal law and regulations, placing migrants and American communities at risk, and subjecting local communities to unreasonable burdens."

Also on Wednesday, speaking on behalf of the people of Texas, Catholic Gov. Greg Abbott officially unleashed his crack attorney general, Ken Paxton, on the border problem, telling him "to initiate an investigation into the role of NGOs [nongovernmental organizations] in planning and facilitating the illegal transportation of illegal immigrants across our borders."

Earlier this month, the Heritage Foundation released findings from its investigation of the border crisis.

Specifically naming Catholic Charities, the report "confirmed that a host of NGOs are actively facilitating the Biden border crisis."

Finally feeling the heat, Catholic Charities, which failed to respond to a February inquiry from the Congressmen, is denying any wrongdoing, calling the accusations "factually inaccurate."

Once motivated by the love of Christ to help others, Catholic Charities has lost its way and has become an enemy of the people — even the people it claims to be trying to save.

Next to the federal government, Catholic Charities is the nation's largest social safety-net provider.
