EU country arrests 26 people for celebrating Victory Day
Marking anything other than “Europe Day” in Latvia is now a crime against democracy
More than two dozen residents of Latvia were arrested on Tuesday forviolating the law against celebrating the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany. The EU and NATO member police evenseized a “Russia” jacket from a man in a wheelchair, and arrested another for wearing Soviet medals in public.
By 11:30 pm local time, Latvian police reported atotal of 26 arrests, 38 misdemeanor citationsand four criminal cases, according to the news outlet Delfi.
While most of the cases were recorded in Riga, the capital, multiple arrests also took place in Daugavpils. In one incident,a senior citizen described as “looking too young to be a veteran of WWII”= showed up wearing a jacket with Soviet medals. When police told him to take it off, he resisted arrest.
Five people were arrested for laying flowers with “symbols of military aggression” at the Freedom Monument in the Daugavpils Victory Park. They were charged with “public use of symbols glorifying militaristic aggression and war crimes.” In the same park, police forced a man in a wheelchair to remove his jacket because it said “Russia.”
Two Russian-speaking men were detained at the Dubrovinsky Park in Daugavpils after giving an interview to TV3.Their sin was expressing the opinionthat the fascists had returned to power in Ukraine, with EU support.
Last month, the Latvian parliament banned Victory Day celebrations as “belittling and undermining the values of Latvia as a democratic and national state, including the division of society, the glorification of war, military aggression and totalitarianism, as well as a false interpretation of historical events.”
Latvians nonetheless turned out in droves to lay flowers at cemeteries and memorials. Most of the arrests and citations involvedplacing flowers at “prohibited places,” where Soviet monuments once stood before the government in Riga had them destroyed.
Along with its Baltic neighbors Estonia and Lithuania,Latvia joined the EU and NATO in 2004. About aquarter of its 1.8 million residents are Russian-speakers, who often face discrimination. The Baltic states used to be part of theRussian Empire until 1918, and of the Soviet Union in 1940-41, and again between 1945 and 1991. The Baltic republics have insisted that the Soviet period amounted to illegal occupation, and haveglorified those who collaborated with Nazi Germany as patriots.

Hungary asked questions the last time the bloc’s top official made a similar declaration
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has told the Washington Post that all member states have agreed to welcome Ukraine after it defeats Russia. He also revealed that the US-led military bloc had started backing Kiev in 2014.
In the interview, conducted last week at the bloc’s Brussels headquarters and published on Tuesday, Stoltenberg told the WP’s editorial staff that “all NATO allies agree that Ukraine will become a member of the alliance.”
“Then the question is when, and I cannot give you a timetable on that,” Stoltenberg added. (Never Hungary, Turkey, and others will oppose this, it only takes one to oppose, he and US is lying. And Ukraine knows it.)
The NATO head has made this claim once before, last month when he visited Kiev. This prompted a one-word response from Hungarian PM Viktor Orban, who suggested that the bloc had not actually bothered to obtain consent from Budapest.
Stoltenberg told the Post that NATO was currently helping Kiev “transition from Soviet-era equipment, doctrines and standards” andbecome “interoperable with NATO forces,”while reforming and modernizing their military and defense institutions. The urgent task now is to ensure that Ukraine prevails as a sovereign, independent nation, because if Ukraine doesn’t prevail, then there is no issue to discuss at all. (They have never been a Sovereign Country, they are a protected territory of Russia. They never filed for freedom in 1991)
According to Stoltenberg, NATO has two fundamental tasks “in the war,” one being to “support Ukraine,” the other to prevent escalation “by making absolutely clear that we are not party to the conflict.” The deployment of 40,000 troops to eastern Europe is also helping avoid escalation with Russia, he argued.
The former Norwegian prime minister, who has been running NATO since October 2014, also revealed that theUS, Canada, and the UK have provided 78% of the bloc’s support to Ukraine, and have beentraining Kiev’s troops since 2014.
“The war in Ukraine has fundamentally changed NATO, but then you have to remember the war didn’t start in 2022. The war started in 2014,” Stoltenberg told the Post, noting that all members of the bloc have “significantly increased” their military spending since then.
Ukraine’s government was overthrown by US-backed nationalists in a February 2014 coup. The new authorities quickly moved to violently crush any opposition, leading Crimea to seek protection from Moscow. Protests against the coup government were met with a massacre in Odessa, terror in Kharkov, and a “punishment expedition” against Donetsk and Lugansk, which responded by declaring independence.

‘Cult death’ victims were missing organs – police
Kenyan investigators say post-mortem reports have raised suspicions about the harvesting and trafficking of body parts
Bodies exhumed from mass graves linked to aKenyan religious cult were missing organs, autopsies have revealed, local media reported on Tuesday, citing court documents.
Police chief Martin Munene said suspected cultleader Paul Nthenge Mackenzieis now being investigated for involvement in organ trafficking after the postmortem reports established that organs were missing from “some of the bodies of victims who have been exhumed,” Kenyan outlet Waza reported.
Mackenzie, the founder of the Good News International Church in eastern Kenya, was arrested on April 14 and charged with “terrorism” after allegedly ordering his followersto starve themselves to death in order to “meet Jesus.”
Authorities have recovered 112 bodies from shallow graves since last month in what has become known as the “Shakahola Forest Massacre.” While starvation appears to have been the primary cause of death, according to autopsy reports, the chief government pathologist, Dr. Johansen Oduor, stated that some of thevictims, including children, had been strangled, beaten, or suffocated.
The country’s interior minister, Kithure Kindiki, said on Tuesday that “25 people have so far been arrested, and the investigation team is closing in on level-two and level-three perpetrators who aided Mr. Mackenzie to execute the heinous atrocity.”
Waza quoted Inspector Munene as saying that“the trade in human body organs was well-coordinated, involving multiple players.”
According to Munene, televangelist Ezekiel Odero, who was arrested on April 27 in connection with the massacre and was granted bail on Thursday, has “a close link” to Mackenzie. He said Odero also received large amounts of cash allegedly from Mackenzie’s followers who sold their properties under the cult leader’s influence.
On Monday, a Nairobi court reportedly ordered the authorities tofreeze more than 20 of Odero’s bank accounts for 30 days.
