Reading the Bible literally is a fool's errand for anyone with a brain.
Remember the part where Jesus says he will not change "one iota" of "the Law"… and then he immediately goes and interprets the Law in a way that is highly, like, revisionary.
Pagan religions (even at times in sophisticated Greece and Rome) demanded ACTUAL human sacrifice (not merely a seeming glorification of one sacrifice).
Now flip it around….Jesus is not supposed to be merely God's son, but God himself.
So God is inflicting the pain on himself.
Is that absurd?
But maybe the point is that being able to take on even the most extreme pain in the most crazy circumstances can be endured, so long as we seek to act rightly… maybe it yields extraordinary things.
