Why did David flee Absalom?
In 2 Samuel 15, Absalom wins the hearts of the people, plotting to take the throne away from his father David. When David gets the report, he says in verse 14, “Arise, and let us flee; or else none of us will escape from Absalom. Hurry to depart, lest he overtake us quickly, and bring down evil on us, and strike the city with the edge of the sword.”
David was an experienced man of war. He was a brilliant strategist. He had an army of mighty men who were loyal to him. Why did he run away so quickly? What did he see that justified this course of action?
Answer
It would be helpful to grasp the events that led to Absolom’s banishment from court then subsequent reconciliation with his father. These events are recorded in 2 Samuel 13 and 14. Absolom returned to Hebron, where David was first proclaimed King and where Absolom was born. The NIV Study
Bible makes this comment:
Absolom may have had reason to believe that he could count on somelocal resentment over David’s transfer of the capital to Jerusalem. Hebron was also the site of an important sanctuary.
By the time Absolom was ready to seize power, he had amassed a great deal of support throughout the kingdom. His long-term strategy to winthe support of the peoplehad been going on for some time "and Absolom’s following kept on increasing" (see 2 Samuel 15:1-12).
A messenger came and told David, "The hearts of the men of Israel are with Absolom." Then David said to all his officials who were with him in Jerusalem, "Come! We must flee, or none of us will escape from Absolom. We must leave immediately, or we will move quickly to overtake us and bring ruin upon us and put the city to the sword" (2 Samuel 15:13-14).
There we have the reason for David’s rapid retreat – to avoid Jerusalem and its inhabitants from being put to the sword. David realised he simply couldn’t win this battle. "He who fights and runs away lives to fight another day."

why biblically or otherwise so important to recognize Jerusalem as the Capitol?
United States recognition of Jerusalem as capital of Israel
The United States officially recognized Jerusalem as the capital city of Israel on December 6, 2017.[1] American president Donald Trump, who signed the U.S. presidential proclamation, also ordered the relocation of the American diplomatic mission to Israel, formerly located in Tel Aviv (see Embassy of the United States, Jerusalem).[2][3] Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the U.S. recognition and praised the announcement by the Trump administration.
