Same-sex 'married' chief minister punishes facility for refusing abortion
The archbishop of Canberra is fighting back after the government of the Australian Capital Territory announced measures to seize the Calvary Public Hospital run by the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary.
"I am deeply troubled about the situation and its implications," Abp. Christopher Prowse wrote on Thursday in a letter to the faithful of the archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn, slamming the "shocking news" of the state's decision to "compulsorily acquire" the hospital.
Prowse warned that "this extraordinary and completely unnecessary government intervention could set the scene for future 'acquisitions' of any faith-based health facility, or, indeed, any faith-based enterprise including education or social welfare."
"I am also concerned that this action, based on obsessive government control, would deprive future Catholic generations in Canberra of the choice of hospital care based on the ethos of our cherished Catholic faith," Prowse stressed.
ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr, the first openly homosexual head of state in Australia, led the forced takeover of the hospital after the April 2023 "Inquiry into Abortion and Reproductive Choice in the ACT" asked the Catholic hospital to provide full abortion services "in accordance with human rights."
"Following the legality of abortion, societal punitive responses may have ended from the State but they still prosper at the hands of the Church," the report stated. "The medical care limited by Calvary's Catholic ethos has implications for life-saving reproductive care beyond the provision of abortion."

Suggests the Church and Justice Department could be in cover-up cahoots
A Wisconsin priest and Wisconsin-based sex abuse victims' group is calling on the state's attorney general to provide more information in relation to an open records request for communications between the Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) and Catholic dioceses and religious orders.
In a video statement released by Nate's Mission on Tuesday, Fr. James Connell addressed a recent DOJ update he found unsatisfactory.
"What came off the page to me right away looking through that document was the information he was not addressing," Connell commented. "It is not about what he did say."
Connell was referring to Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul, who has been in office since 2019.
Nate's Mission describes itself as "a survivor-led movement that seeks the full recognition of victims, accountability for offenders and those who enabled them, and reconciliation through truth-telling that transforms and strengthens the public good."
Father Connell is a priest of the Milwaukee archdiocese, a canon lawyer and former vice chancellor. He does not currently have faculties for and is suspended from offering the sacrament of confession.

NYC expands Construction Fraud Task Force

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has added five new state and federal agency partners to its Construction Fraud Task Force, which investigates and prosecutes corruption and fraud in New York City’s construction industry.
The state’s Department of Labor, the New York State Insurance Fund, the state Office of the Inspector General, OSHA and the Wage and Hour Division of the federal Labor Department will join the Task Force, District Attorney Alvin Bragg Jr.’s office announced last week.
Formed by the DA’s office in 2015, the task force’s partners “investigate criminal health and safety lapses in the construction industry, including worksite fatalities and safety hazards, and issues of construction corruption and fraud in the New York City metro area,” the announcement states.
