A17-year-old Honduran unaccompanied migrant died in the custody of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, officials confirmed.
The teenager, Angel Eduardo Maradiaga Espinoza, died while in a shelter located in Safety Harbor, Florida, Honduras Foreign Minister Enrique Reina said.
White House press secretary Karine Jean Pierre said Friday that the government opened a medical investigation into the minor's death on May 10. "It’s deeply saddening to hear. And we are certainly aware of the tragic loss," she said.
Health and Human Services, which oversees long term housing facilities for unaccompanied minors, said it is "deeply saddened by this tragic loss and our heart goes out to the family, with whom we are in touch," Politico reported.
Maradiaga Espinoza suffered from epilepsy since he was a child but did not show serious signs before he went to the United States, his mother, Norma Saraí Espinoza Maradiaga, told The Associated Press.
Maradiaga Espinoza left from Honduras on April 25 and crossed into the U.S. days later. He was referred to Health and Human Services on May 5, his mother also said.

Zelensky nearly lost his phone in Berlin – Bild
The brief slip-up came at the end of a high-security trip to Germany
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky briefly left his cell phone in a car in Berlin on Sunday, before a police officer reunited him with it, German tabloid Bild has reported. Recently leaked documents suggested that the Ukrainian leader has already had his communications tapped.
Zelensky traveled by car to the German Chancellery on Sunday afternoon, where he held a meeting with Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Photos published by Bild showed that he was brought to a helicopter after the appointment, but left his cell phone behind in the car.
Immediately before the helicopter departed, a Federal Criminal Police officer spotted the device and rushed it to Zelensky.
It is unclear, but unlikely, whether the phone was tampered with in the time that Zelensky was separated from it.

CBD for COVID-19: Marijuana ingredient may prevent virus from causing lung damage

CHICAGO, Ill. — While millions of people receive the COVID-19 vaccination, millions more are still waiting for more doses to become available. Until then, a new study finds a popular ingredient in cannabis can block the virus from spreading through the lungs. Researchers in Chicago say cannabidiol (CBD) keeps SARS-CoV-2, the virus causing COVID-19, from replicating in the lungs and causing severe damage.
According to a pre-print study — meaning it has not been peer-reviewed yet — CBD and its metabolite 7-OH-CBD blocks out SARS-CoV-2 from replicating in the patient’s epithelial lung cells. Normally, the virus uses its spike protein to latch on to healthy cells and cut their way in. From there, SARS-CoV-2 can hijack the cell functions to make more of the virus.
A team from the University of Chicago discovered that CBD inhibits the gene expression in virus cells, including the RNA coding for the spike protein. Researchers say it’s an important find as coronavirus vaccines are still in short supply in various countries.
“To date, few therapies have been identified that block SARS-CoV-2 replication and viral production,” study author Marsha Rosner and the team write in their report in bioRxiv.
“This study highlights CBD, and its active metabolite, 7-OH-CBD, as potential preventative agents and therapeutic treatments for SARS-CoV-2 at early stages of infection.”
Another benefit of using CBD?
Cannabidiol, the non-psychoactive chemical in marijuana, is growing in popularity as a natural remedy for various conditions. Along with pain management and stress relief, previous studies point to CBD having antiviral properties and being able to treat antibiotic-resistant infections. The U.S. food and Drug Administration approved its use as a treatment for epilepsy.
