blackberry required a special server to work.
they ran all sorts of out of band signaling through an off-prem system.
current samsung/google/apple phones all currently use software defined radios.

poor source, i get it, but this was the Blackberrys fatal flaw.
but also an excellent monitoring point. or control center.
i don't recall anything expressly about the b.e.s.
anyone could run one, with the right money/hardware/ connections.
it's not as easy to tap/control the others. not reliably.
i think we're saying the same thing from different sides of the idea.
why was blackberry destroyed? imo insecure as hell
how was the cia comp'd? someone corrupt using what they thought was a secure channel to conduct sloppy side biz.
hilldawg comped hacked and caught from all sides
yeah yeah. she was breaking the law and was double comped, exposed everything. this forced the cias hand about all the other hardware hacks down shenzen row.
it's all insecure and she thought she was being smart by hosting her own servers but it was worse than she could have imagined.
did you know she had open rdp sockets exposed to the web? .
insane.
