I recently read an article in a respectable WWII history magazine about Dutch SS officers. Most of them signed up for the SS after Germany invaded because they the wanted food and skills that the German military offered. It wasn't about "gassing the Jews."
The point here is Americans are sold a very narrow narrative about World War II (specifically Nazi Germany). The truth about that war is far more nuanced that we're allowed to believe.
