Kissinger behind 3 million civilian deaths – report

The former US diplomat’s actions caused, among others, 150,000 Cambodian civilians to die, many more than previously thought

Henry Kissinger, the foreign policy eminence grise who has advised half a dozen presidents, has caused the deaths of over 3 million people, according to an Intercept report published Tuesday in observation of the realpolitik strategist’s 100th birthday.

While critics of the Nixon-era secretary of state and national security adviser often describe him as a war criminal for his pivotal role in numerous US-backed genocides and coups, the report argues Kissinger's body count has been widely underestimated, particularly regarding the secretive, highly illegal expansion of the Vietnam War into Cambodia in the 1970s.

Between the genocides he sponsored in East Timor and Bangladesh, the continent-wide terrorism, coups and death squads of Operation Condor in Latin America, the fomenting of civil wars in Southern Africa, and his carpet-bombing of Cambodia and Laos under the guise of chasing the Vietnamese, Kissinger is believed to be responsible for over 3 million civilian deaths – more if one counts the casualties that have resulted from advice he gave the private sector.

Kissinger has 'only' acknowledged that his actions caused the deaths of 50,000 Cambodians and blames the Vietnamese, the supposed targets of the US' bombing campaign (the coordinates of which were logged incorrectly so as to be recorded as legal strikes within Vietnam). Intercept reporter Nick Truse argues the number is closer to 150,000, pointing to numerous documented examples of egregious and deliberate undercounting of civilian casualties. The figure represents more than six times more civilians than the US has killed in airstrikes since 9/11.

Transcripts from the Intercept's “exclusive archive” of declassified US military documents from a secret Pentagon war crimes task force reveal it was Kissinger’s decision to relay then-president Richard Nixon’s drunk, belligerent trash talk about Cambodia into coherent instructions to the Pentagon to begin a “massive bombing campaign” in the country in 1970.

Kissinger’s now-infamous directive to shoot “anything that flies on anything that moves” exploded the secret war, tripling the number of bombings by the end of the year. He allegedly approved all 3,875 individual bombings of the war, and the bombers dropped over 257,000 tonnes of explosives on Cambodia in 1973 alone.

The Intercept’s archive also revealed numerous brutal ground raids on Cambodian villages that have since been all but memory-holed; Truse confirmed via interviews with survivors that the raids were far deadlier than reported. While the airstrikes were frequently hushed up as “pilot error” – “errors” that were nevertheless repeated thousands of times – the US Army, in an internal investigation, actually blamed its press corps when ground troops were caught looting a village they had just raided.

Kissinger's carpet-bombing of Cambodia paved the way for the Khmer Rouge, the genocidal dictatorship that killed 2 million Cambodians – 20% of the country’s population – which he privately (and approvingly) referred to as “murderous thugs” while helping them secure regional allies.

Kissinger has never been prosecuted – or even officially charged – with war crimes, nor has the US military made any systemic efforts to hold accountable the troops who actually did the killing.

Microsoft Says CCP Hackers Compromised 'Critical' US Infrastructure As DHS Warns Of 'Grave Threat'

Microsoft on Wednesday warned that a Chinese state-sponsored hacking group - "Volt Typhoon" has compromised "critical" US cyber infrastructure across several industries - including manufacturing, construction, maritime, government, information technology and education.

The group, which has operated since 2021, is apparently working to disrupt "critical communications infrastructure between the United States and Asia," as well as gather intelligence, in order to weaken efforts during "future crises."

Infrastructure in nearly every critical sector has been impacted, Microsoft said, including the communications, transport, and maritime industries. Government organizations were also targeted. -CNBC

According to the advisory from Microsoft - which has "directly notified targeted or compromised customers," the attack is apparently ongoing. The company has urged impacted customers to "close or change credentials for all compromised accounts."

As Bloomberg notes, "Guam, a US island territory located 1,600 miles (about 2,600 kilometers) east of Manila, has become an increasingly important military and strategic hub as tensions with China ratchet up, including the possibility that it might use its military to enforce its claim to the self-ruled island of Taiwan."

Volt Typhoon initially gained access to the targeted organizations through internet-facing devices manufactured by Fortinet Inc., a Sunnyvale, California-based cybersecurity company, according to Microsoft, adding it was still investigating how the hackers were able to access the equipment. The hackers used whatever privileges they could gain from the Fortinet devices to extract more credentials to authenticate to other devices on the networks, Microsoft said. There, the hackers intended “to perform espionage and maintain access without being detected for as long as possible,” Microsoft added. -Bloomberg

Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security has warned that the CCP presents a "grave threat" to the US homeland - and is actively working to undermine US security and damage America's economic standing, according to a senior official

More via The Epoch Times,

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP), which rules China as a single-party state, seeks to leverage the whole of the Chinese nation against the United States, said Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Iranga Kahangama.

House Ethics Committee Concludes Probe Into Rep. Eric Swalwell's Associations With Alleged Chinese Spy

A two-year investigation into Rep. Eric Swalwell’s (D-Calif.) associations with a Chinese national and suspected spy has concluded, the bipartisan House Ethics Committee said on May 22.

The Committee announced the news in a private letter (pdf) to Swalwell in which chairman Michael Guest (R-Miss.) and ranking member Susan Wild (D-Pa.) explained that no further action will be taken against the California Democrat.

Swalwell published the letter on his official website.

“As you are aware, on April 9, 2021, the Committee on Ethics (Committee) informed you that it had determined to investigate allegations raised in the complaint that you may have violated House Rules, laws, or other standards of conduct in connection with your interactions with Ms. Christine Fang,” the letter read.

“The Committee will take no further action in this matter,” the letter continued.

Despite the Committee’s conclusion, Guest and Wild urged Swalwell to remain cautious and conscious of the possibility of improper influence by foreign agents and governments who they said may attempt to secure improper influence through gifts and other interactions.

“We encourage you to contact the Office of House Security for any guidance on steps you can take to prevent or address such attempts,” the letter concluded.

Political Intelligence, Influence Operations

Swalwell has been embroiled in the Chinese spy saga since 2020 when reports emerged that he had been targeted by a suspected Chinese intelligence operative known as Fang Fang or Christine Fang.

According to a December 2020 report by Axios, Fang, who enrolled as a student at California State University East Bay in 2011, had targeted Swalwell and other political figures between 2011 and 2015 after meeting him in Dublin City, California, when he was a council member.

Comer Drops $5 Million Biden Bribe Bombshell in Letter Threatening Wray with Contempt Over Subpoenaed FBI Whistleblower Document

Rep. James Comer (R-KY), Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, sent a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray on Wednesday threatening Wray with being held in contempt of Congress for refusing to turn over a subpoenaed FBI form FD-1023 that a whistleblower claims documents intelligence that then Vice President Biden took a cash bribe from a foreign national in exchange for favorable policy decisions. Comer expressed dissatisfaction with Wray’s response so far and gave a May 30 deadline to comply with the subpoena.

Comer dropped two bombshell’s in Tuesday’s letter. In discussing the FBI’s complaint that the search terms for the document request are too broad, Comer added the term “five million” (or variations of 5 million), saying that was the dollar amount of the alleged bribe paid to Biden. The other bombshell was that the FBI told the committee it had “many” CHS (confidential human source) reports on Biden in the period in question of the subpoenaed document, June 2020.

“…to narrow the breadth of the subpoena, we are providing additional terms based on unclassified and legally protected whistleblower disclosures that may be referenced in the FD-1023 form: “June 30, 2020” and “five million.”6 These terms relate to the date on the FD-1023 form and its reference to the amount of money the foreign national allegedly paid to receive the desired policy outcome.”

“Despite the Committee’s subpoena being narrowly tailored to June 2020, FBI staff indicated that the search terms were broad because there were many responsive documents containing the term “Biden” in its CHS database for that month.”

One Way To Do It

Comer posted the letter to Twitter with this message, “FBI Director Wray is defying a congressional subpoena for an unclassified record alleging a criminal scheme involving then-VP Joe Biden and a foreign national. If Director Wray refuses to hand over this record, @GOPoversight will begin contempt of Congress proceedings.”

Electricity prices to rise by up to 25 per cent in New South Wales, South-East Queensland and South Australia

The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) has confirmed electricity prices will increase by between 20 and 25 per cent from July 1 — higher than the draft offer put forward by the regulator in March.

Key points:

Electricity prices will rise between 19.6 per cent and 23.9 per cent in NSW, SA and South-East Queensland

The price increases will come into effect on July 1

The AER says the increase is lower than what was initially forecast last year

The AER's decision will directly affect around 600,000 customers in South Australia, New South Wales and South-East Queensland who are on the default offer, which is effectively a price cap for household and small business customers.

In March, the regulator released draft electricity price increases of between 20 and 22 per cent.

But the AER said after listening to stakeholder feedback, the default market offer has resulted in a "small change of between 1 per cent to 3 per cent" difference from its draft offer.

"The changes we have made are largely updates based on additional, finalised information and refinements to our methodology to better reflect the costs of retailing electricity," the AER said.

Chair of the AER, Clare Savage, said the price increases are "fairly close" to the draft offer, and is much lower than previously expected.

"If they are a default market offer customer … the price increase will be between 19.6 per cent and 24.9 per cent, so the draft decision stage it was between 19.5 and 23.7, so it is fairly close to where we were at the draft decision," she said.

"It's much lower than where we were fearing it could have been last September, October.

"But still obviously significant price rise for customers and difficult news at a time of cost of living pressure."

Residential customers will see price increases between 20.8 per cent and 23.9 per cent for those without controlled load, and between 19.6 per cent at 24.9 per cent for customers with controlled load.

Small business customers are facing increases of 14.7 per cent and 28.9 per cent.

The price changes will come into effect on July 1.

Price increases account for rising inflation

Speaking on RN Breakfast on Thursday morning, Ms Savage explained that inflation had been a substantial factor in the price increase.

"There's an increase in the costs of building or recovering the cost of our transmission and distribution systems … and there's also inflation that's applied to the costs that retailers face," she said.

"So there is a bit of inflation that flows through in this final decision today. And we have updated for the latest inflation data."
