Emmanuel Macron condemns attack on artwork accused of depicting paedophilia

Legal bids have failed to remove controversial canvas that was spray painted by an elderly protester at the Palais de Tokyo

Emmanuel Macron has defended a Swiss artist’s controversial painting – which critics say portrays paedophilia – after it was defaced at the Palais de Tokyo on Sunday.

“Targeting a work of art is an attack on our values,” the French president wrote on Twitter.

“In France, art is always free and respect for artistic creation is guaranteed,” he added.

Titled “F— Abstraction!,” the painting by Swiss artist Miriam Cahn depicts a small person with their hands tied behind their back performing oral sex on an imposing faceless figure.

Critics, including children’s rights organisations and far-Right political groups, have argued the smaller figure in the painting depicts a child: a charge that Cahn has vehemently denied.

Rather, the 73-year-old artist says the painting portrays how rape is used as a weapon of war, particularly in the context of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Last month, in a previous defence over a legal bid to remove the painting, Cahn wrote that the size between the two figures is a metaphor depicting “the corporal power of the oppressor, and the fragility of the oppressed”.

The resulting judgment saw France’s supreme court rule in favour of keeping the artwork on display.

‘Certainly hard to look at’

On Monday, Rima Abdul Malak, the French culture minister, visited the Palais de Tokyo to defend the painting, denouncing the defacement as “a direct attack on freedom of expression”.

She added: “These works are certainly hard to look at, but they start from an intention to denounce the horrors of war.”

According to a source close to the police investigation surrounding the vandalism, an “elderly man” who was “unhappy with the sexual portrayal of a child and an adult,” walked into the exhibit on Sunday and applied purple spray paint to the artwork.

The Palais de Tokyo says the man “was immediately apprehended by security guards” before being taken away by police. The modern art museum also said it “will file a complaint for damage to property and freedom of expression”.

The painting, which has attracted some 80,000 visitors so far, will remain on display until the exhibit ends on May 14.

French film director Justine Triet condemned what she called French President Emmanuel Macron’s “shocking” repression of the pension reform protests during her Palme d’Or acceptance speech at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday.

After stepping on stage to accept the award for her film, “The Anatomy of a Chute,” Triet referenced the wave of protests that have gripped France this year.

“This year this country has been taken over by a historic, extremely powerful, unanimous protest on pension reform. This protest has been denied and repressed in a shocking way,” Triet stressed.

Triet maintained that an “increasingly uninhibited” power pattern is breaking out in several areas of French society including cinema.

“The commodification of culture that the neoliberal government defends is in the process of breaking the French cultural exception,” Triet continued. She was presented the award by the iconic actress Jane Fonda onstage.

“We have to make room for them, room that I was given 15 years ago in a slightly less hostile world where it was still possible to make mistakes and start again,” Triet added.

Triet is just the third woman to win the Palme d’Or, one of cinema’s tpp prizes, after New Zealand’s Jane Campion and France’s Julia Ducournau.

Her work – a drama about a woman suspected of her husband’s murder – beat off competition including Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City.”

The second-highest prize after the Palme d’Or, the Grand Prix, went to British director Jonathan Glazer’s for his film “Zone of Interest,” about a family living next to Auschwitz.

Walworth County Dominion Voting system is connected to the internet. County Clerks says no, Town Clerk says no, log file tapes say yes. I traced these to Hamilton, Ontario. Not always an exact process, but the trace showed within 50,000 meters of Dominion's Toronto office: 2nd floor Robertson Blgd, 215 Spadina Ave, Toronto. That is where Yvonne Cai, a Chinese Nationalist, I discovered was coding for Dominion voting machines. She fled once I was getting too close in the investigation and no longer works for Dominion. She coded firmware, software, sent hundreds, perhaps thousands of emails to wisconsin clerks. I have over 500 of them.

Posts push empty claims of election fraud, illegal activity in Wisconsin

Social media users are reviving unsupported claims of fraud and lawbreaking in Wisconsin’s 2020 election after a former Wisconsin Supreme Court justice issued an interim report to state lawmakers that ignored some key facts.

Michael Gableman, who was hired by the Assembly’s top Republican to investigate the election, presented a report last week that spun a misleading narrative of illegal activity, pushed claims of widespread fraud in nursing homes without specific evidence, and encouraged the state to “take a very hard look” at decertifying the election, an action that lawmakers have refused and attorneys say is illegal.

The Wisconsin Elections Commission on Friday issued a seven-page rebuttal to Gableman’s report, calling his major findings inaccurate and insisting the state’s election was conducted fairly and accurately. Gableman didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Here’s a look at the facts around some of the claims that continue to circulate online.

CLAIM: The election in Green Bay, Wisconsin, was turned over to a Democratic activist who ran it from his hotel room using a secret Wi-Fi network.

THE FACTS: Green Bay’s mayor and city attorneys have refuted these claims.

The misleading claims focus on consultant Michael Spitzer-Rubenstein, who was hired by the city to assist with the election. He worked for the National Vote at Home Institute, a group that advocates for voting by mail.

Social media users claimed the city handed over keys to an election counting facility to Spitzer-Rubenstein, but a report from the city of Green Bay said he never actually handled the keys or counted ballots.

Instead, Spitzer-Rubenstein’s consulting role included making recommendations to staff “on the logistics, set up, and operations” of the election, according to the report. The election was administered exclusively by city staff and no ballots were ever in the care or custody of consultants, the Green Bay mayor’s office said.

Social media users also have claimed Spitzer-Rubenstein controlled voting machines through a secret Wi-Fi network, but no vote tabulating machines were ever connected to the internet, according to the city’s report. Most tabulators in the state are incapable of connecting to the internet, according to the Wisconsin Elections Commission.

Three Wi-Fi networks were active at the city’s central counting facility — one for poll workers, one to run livestream video feeds and one for the general public, the report said. The Wi-Fi network used for the livestream was hidden from public view to prevent people from connecting their devices to it and pulling bandwidth away from the video feeds, the report added.

Spitzer-Rubenstein did not return a phone message seeking comment.

Former President Donald Trump took 52% of the vote in Brown County, where Green Bay is located.

Donald Trump Jr shares doctored Office clip showing Ron DeSantis wearing a woman’s suit

‘Folks, we simply are not ready for the 2024 GOP primary memes,’ Democratic consultant tweets

Donald Trump Jr has shared a seemingly AI-generated clip of Ron DeSantis edited into the role of Steve Carell’s Michael Scott in The Office in a clip in which the character is mocked for wearing a woman’s suit.

“Imagine when next time it’s not an obvious spoof from The Office but an attempt to depict itself as legitimate and much more nefarious,” CNN’s Jake Tapper tweeted.

“Don Jr among others has shared this video. I don’t think any of us are ready for this next election online,” Alex Thompson of Axios said.

Democratic consultant Tim Hogan added that “Folks, we simply are not ready for the 2024 GOP primary memes”.

“Rhonda Santis is a perfect drag name, just saying,” Mr Hogan tweeted.

Philip Germain at the Lincoln Project added: “I am once again asking for Steve Carrell to play DeSantis on SNL.”

“I for one welcome the onslaught of election-season deepfakes,” Jesse Walker of Reason magazine wrote.

As the mockery continued of Mr DeSantis’s glitch-ridden campaign launch, the Florida governor began to push back.

He slammed his main rival for the 2024 GOP nomination, former President Donald Trump, claiming he “is a different guy” than when he first ran for president.

Mr Trump is leading all other Republican candidates for the party’s presidential nomination, with Mr DeSantis running in second place, according to polls.

Mr DeSantis officially embarked on his own bid for the White House earlier this week in a chaotic Twitter Spaces event with billionaire Elon Musk.

The governor told radio host Matt Murphy that he was running to the right of Mr Trump and portrayed himself as more conservative, according to USA Today.

“It seems like he’s running to the left and I have always been somebody that’s just been moored in conservative principles,” said Mr DeSantis.

“So these will be interesting debates to have, but I can tell you, you don’t win nationally by moving to the left, you win nationally by standing for bold policy. We showed that in Florida. I never watered down anything I did.”

And Mr DeSantis claimed that Mr Trump is not the same person who first ran for office.

“I don’t know what happened to Donald Trump – this is a different guy today than when he was running in 2015 and 2016 and I think the direction that he’s going with his campaign is the wrong direction,” Mr DeSantis said.

And he attacked Mr Trump over his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic while in office.

“I think [Trump] did great for three years, but when he turned the country over to Fauci in March of 2020 that destroyed millions of people’s lives,” Mr DeSantis said on a podcast.

“And in Florida, we were one of the few that stood up, cut against the grain, took incoming fire from media, bureaucracy, the left, even a lot of Republicans, had school open, preserved businesses.”

7 RNC officers now accused of sexually assaulting women while on duty, lawyer says

9 women have now reported sex assault, 3 more allege officers asked for sex in patrol car

Seven Royal Newfoundland Constabulary officers, one of them still a member of the force, are now facing sexual assault allegations, according to St. John's sexual abuse litigator Lynn Moore.

Moore said Wednesday afternoon that nine women have contacted her alleging sexual assault by RNC officers.

Three other women have also reported that RNC officers asked them to engage in sexual activity while giving them a ride home.

Inappropriate workplace conduct has also been reported, she said, an alleged incident occurring in 2015.

All accusations so far occurred at least six years ago, said Moore, who added that some of the women do not know the identity of the accused officers.

Moore says she's early in the process of gathering details of the allegations. On Monday, she had heard allegations about one officer. The number of accused RNC members has risen over the course of the week.

RNC has ID'd one member

On Wednesday morning, the RNC said it had so far identified one of its former officers facing sex assault claims but legally can't disclose that officer's name.

"The RNC has reached out to Ms. Moore in an attempt to identify the subject officers and further determine if the victims would provide a statement to the RNC," said Supt. Tom Warren, speaking to the media about the allegations Wednesday morning.

Moore says she did not release any names to the RNC, and Warren would not tell reporters how the force identified the accused.

Warren said the force has contacted SIRT-NL, the province's civilian-led oversight agency, to signal co-operation with any investigation they may lead, and has opened a disciplinary record review of the accused officer it has identified.

It's not clear whether that officer had been previously investigated internally or whether the RNC knew about any of this week's allegations.

Moore told CBC News on Tuesday that the women who had contacted her were not interested in speaking with police or engaging with the criminal justice system.

SIRT-NL — the Serious Incident Response Team of Newfoundland and Labrador — said in a statement Wednesday it has not received any complaints from the women who contacted Moore so far.

"SIRT-NL's intention is to respect and support any decisions the affected persons make as to whether to come forward and make a formal complaint," the statement said.

Warren read from a statement before taking questions from reporters on Wednesday morning.

"Victims have the power to report, the power to tell their story to a passionate professional, and the power to see that their abuser is held accountable for their actions," Warren stated.

He later specified survivors can meet with RNC sexual assault specialists to learn about the criminal process and decide whether to proceed or make an anonymous report through CrimeStoppers.

"We are not going to move forward [with charges] unless we have the assistance of the victim," he said. "What's important is that these officers … are identified. It's important that we know who these officers are."

The force does not have the power to discipline retired officers, but it can open criminal investigations without a complaint.

"These officers will be held accountable," Warren said.

Moore warned later on Wednesday that police and the Crown have a legal obligation to pursue charges in sexual assault cases, and may proceed to trial contrary to the wishes of the complainant.

Russia launched ‘largest drone attack’ on Ukrainian capital before Kyiv Day; 1 killed

Ukraine’s capital was subjected to the largest drone attack since the start of Russia’s war, local officials said, as Kyiv prepared to mark the anniversary of its founding on Sunday. At least one person was killed, but officials said scores of drones were shot down, demonstrating Ukraine’s air defense capability.

Russia launched the “most massive attack” on the city overnight Saturday with Iranian-made Shahed drones, said Serhii Popko, a senior Kyiv military official. The attack lasted more than five hours, with air defense reportedly shooting down more than 40 drones.
