Karnow was a writer for Time magazine back in the day; so I can't say how much of it is true or not; But he paints a picture of at least what some people THINK happened.

They wanted to create a "New World" and destroy the past. So anyone connected to the way things were, was rounded up and publicly killed.

Crowds would watch. It became a public spectacle - with people sitting out having their dinner where they could watch, and the names of who's going to die next was all part of the menu.
