If a poll is reported on, and the reporter knowingly misrepresents the poll whether the poll itself is correct or incorrect, that's still a lie, because it's knowing misrepresentation.
An analogy will help.
Suppose a untrustworthy source makes a statement X to you, but then updates what they said to Y.
Whether the latest information Y the untrustworthy source gave is correct or incorrect, it would be a NEW lie, a NEW misrepresentation, for the reporter to say to people 'My source is saying X'.
What's to stop a person from committing worse evil to 'show the world' how evil their company is, if it's deemed it's ok to engage in evil because the company 'needs' to be seen as evil in the eyes of observers?
