SALT LAKE CITY — Rep. Chris Stewart plans to resign his seat in Congress, possibly as soon as this week, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.

According to the report, Stewart announced his plans to family at a gathering over the Memorial Day weekend, citing ongoing health issues with his wife.

"This is a bombshell development, no one saw this coming," said Tribune reporter Bryan Schott.

The health issues regarding Stewart's wife are not known.

"I spoke with multiple people close to Stewart or within Stewart's orbit who heard this news, could confirm that this was indeed what was going to happen and that announcement could come sometime within the next week," Schott added.

Stewart's announcement comes less than a year after he won his sixth term in Congress in 2022. He has served in the seat since 2012, with Schott saying Stewart was a key player while serving on the House Intelligence Committee.

Former Rep. Jason Chaffetz gave up his seat in Congress in 2017 to become a contributor to Fox News Channel.
