The Biden-McCarthy Debt Expansion Act just passed the House. To those who thought this was a Republican bill, the numbers don’t lie: 165 Democrats voted for it, and only 149 Republicans joined them. Those voting against it included 71 heroic Republicans and only 46 Democrats.
I wonder how many of the Democratic “no” votes were cast by people who were told by Democratic leaders to vote against the bill—so as not to signal too much to their Republicans colleagues that they’ve been played.
Congressional Republicans who developed and supported this deal: you just got played.
Republicans could still stop it in the Senate—even if all 51 Democrats were to vote for it—if 41 of us were to vote against cloture (or bringing debate to a close).
