US hiring jumped last month. So did unemployment. Here’s what that says about the economy

WASHINGTON (AP) — The nation’s employers stepped up their hiring in May, adding a robust 339,000 jobs, well above expectations and evidence of enduring strength in an economy that the Federal Reserve is desperately trying to cool.

Friday’s report from the government reflected the job market’s resilience after more than a year of aggressive interest rate increases by the Fed. Many industries, from construction to restaurants to health care, are still adding jobs to keep up with consumer demand and restore their workforces to pre-pandemic levels.

Overall, the report painted a mostly encouraging picture of the job market. Yet there were some mixed messages in the May figures. Notably, the unemployment rate rose to 3.7%, from a five-decade low of 3.4% in April. It’s the highest unemployment rate since October. (The government compiles the unemployment data using a different survey than the one used to calculate job gains, and the two surveys sometimes conflict.)

IS THE LABOR MARKET AS STRONG AS THE GAIN OF 339,000 JOBS SUGGESTS?

Probably not. In May, employers added the most jobs since January. So the overall picture is an encouraging one. Yet there are signs that hiring is cooling from the super-heated levels of the past two years.

For one thing, the length of the average work week declined, to 34.3 hours from 34.4 in April. That is a seemingly small drop, but economists said it’s equivalent to cutting several hundred thousand jobs. It means that, on average, weekly paychecks will be slightly smaller. The average work week is down from 34.6 hours a year ago.

Hourly wage growth also dipped in May, evidence that many businesses feel less pressure to dangle higher pay to find and keep workers. Average hourly pay increased 4.3% from a year earlier. That’s down from gangbusters gains of nearly 6% a year ago.

And the rise in the unemployment rate partly reflected higher layoffs. This suggested that not everyone who lost jobs in recent high-profile layoffs by banks, tech firms and media companies has found new work.

Navy drops pride posts, photos on social media accounts

The Navy's Instagram account at one point featured a plane with a rainbow wake in a post, but that has since been removed.

The U.S Navy has dropped pride-related posts and photos from its social media accounts but has not specified why.

On Twitter, the @USNavy account's background photo featured maritime vessels and aircraft leaving wakes of rainbows and featured the word "pride" several times in differing colors. The account currently features the image of an aircraft carrier.

The Navy's Instagram account at one point featured a plane with a rainbow wake in a post, but that has since been removed, according to The Hill. The Navy admitted to the outlet that it had made the posts and subsequently removed them, without explaining their rationale.

"The US Navy posted graphics in support of the start of Pride month to honor the service, commitment, and sacrifice of the LGBTQ+ Service members and personnel who volunteer to defend our country," read the statement. "As we do with all Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute (DEOMI) observance months, we will look for additional opportunities to celebrate the diversity and strength of our Sailors. Members of the LGBTQ+ community serve their country, fully contribute to the DoD mission, and deserve a welcoming environment which enables them to reach their full potential."

More Russian civilians killed by Ukrainian strikes - governor

Belgorod Region head Gladkov said two people were killed and an 11-year-old injured by shrapnel

At least two people were killed and several more injured in the latest Ukrainian shelling of Russia’s Belgorod Region, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said on Friday.

Two residents of the village of Sobolevka were killed outside their homes, Gladkov wrote on his Telegram channel. He added that at least six people were injured, including children. An 11-year-old girl was hospitalized with “a shrapnel injury to the left eye.”

Two more civilians were injured in the city of Shebekino, when a projectile exploded next to their car, the governor said. Both victims were hospitalized with shrapnel wounds, and one of them had sustained a concussion.

The constant shelling prompted the Gladkov this week to announce the evacuation of children from the areas closest to the border with Ukraine.

On Thursday, the Russian Defense Ministry said its troops had repelled an armed incursion from Ukraine into Belgorod Region.

Units made up of Russian volunteers fighting for Kiev have previously claimed responsibility for similar cross-border raids on Belgorod Region in mid-May, and Bryansk Region in early March.
