Egyptian Policeman Kills Three Israeli Soldiers Near Border, Is Shot Dead

Two soldiers were shot dead at a guard post on the Israel-Egypt border in the early morning โ–  According to the IDF, forces identified the gunman and shot him dead in an exchange of fire, which also killed a third Israeli soldier

An Egyptian policeman killed three Israeli soldiers near the Egypt-Israel border and was shot dead, the Israeli military said on Saturday.

Early Saturday morning, two Israel Defense Forces soldiers were shot and killed near a guard post on the border. One of them was identified as Sgt. Lia Ben Nun, 19, a medic from the town of Rishon Leztion; the other as Ori Yitzhak Illouz.

On Saturday afternoon, forces identified the gunman, who had crossed into Israel, and engaged him in a firefight, killing him, according to the military. During the exchange of fire, a third Israeli soldier was killed, the IDF said, whom it named as Staff Sgt. Ohad Dahan, 20, from Ofakim.

A preliminary probe by the military suggested that the Egyptian officer entered Israel by using an emergency passage in the fence at the border, a few hundred meters away from the guard post. It was not clear whether the soldiers were aware of the existence of this passage. The military said it still doesn't know exactly when the policeman entered Israel, and how exactly.

The soldiers who were killed at their post were required to serve in 12-hour shifts, which are exceptionally long for the IDF, especially in hot weather.

The probe showed that at 2:30 A.M., there was a drug smuggling attempt about three kilometers north of the guard post. At 3 A.M., this was intercepted by troops guarding the border. According to the IDF, at 4:15 A.M., Ben Nun and Illouz were last time they answered a check-in communication.

Sometime around 6 or 7 A.M., shots were heard in the area of the border. Ben Nun and Illouz were found dead at 9 A.M., located a few meters away from each other. The probe found that neither had shot at the assailant. It wasn't immediately clear why there was no attempt to contact the two soldiers between 4:15 and 9.

After their bodies were found, according to the military probe, a drone was launched and located a suspicious individual around a kilometer and a half away from the border. Troops were rushed to the scene, and a gunfight ensued in which Dahan and the policeman were killed and another soldiers was lightly wounded.

An Egyptian military statement said three Israeli security personnel and one Egyptian security personnel were killed in the exchange that took place Saturday morning. According to the Egyptian military spokesperson, the police officer crossed the border while chasing after drug smugglers, leading to an exchange of fire with Israeli forces. Egyptian security sources said that Egyptian and Israeli officials are coordinating an investigation into the event.

In the statement, the Egyptian military sent its condolences to the families of the soldiers, and wished a speedy recovery to the wounded.

A political official told Haaretz that Jerusalem "is not expecting a crisis with the Egyptians because of the incident," and that communication is being held on the matter at the military level.

The IDF Spokesperson, Gen. Daniel Hagari, said that this is "a complicated and difficult event that is still under investigation," and added that Israel is examining it alongside Egypt. The IDF and Border Police are increasing their presence in the area.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a statement calling the incident serious and that it "will be fully investigated." He commended the IDF for "eliminating the terrorist," adding that "our hearts are with the families in their deep sorrow."

In December, IDF forces fired on suspects during a drug smuggling attempt on the Israeli side of the Egyptian border, killing one of the suspected smugglers.

Jerusalem Pride Parade, a Roller Coaster of Emotions

An Israeli government has never been so hostile to the LGBTQ community, but the marchers in the Holy City showed that the wider movement for democracy is just as important

โ€œWere you at the parade?โ€ asks the man seated across from me on the train back to Tel Aviv late Thursday night. He's wearing the bright pink shirt of the anti-Netanyahu protest bloc and the blue paper bracelet that marchers in Jerusalem received after security checks. โ€œWhat did you think of it?โ€

Who were the IDF soldiers killed at the Egyptian border?

Three soldiers were killed by an Egyptian police officer at the Egyptian border on Saturday.

The first two identified soldiers who were killed at the Egyptian border on Saturday were identified as Sgt. Lia Ben Nun and St.-Sgt. Ohad Dahan, according to the IDF Spokesperson's Unit.

The IDF said Ben Nun was 19 years old and from Rishon Lezion. She was promoted to the rank of sergeant after her death.

Last week, Ben Nun posted a video on her Tiktok account detailing her journey as a female combat soldier. Through a series of photos, she detailed the highs and lows of her long training program and the friends she had made along the way.

Ben Nun's former teacher told Walla that Ben Nun had always known that she was going to enlist in the IDF in a combat position.

"She showed up on Remembrance Day at the school with uniform and her gun and was so happy and showing off that she's doing well," said the teacher, Noga Adi. "She so badly wanted to enlist to combat and she got it, and she was happy. She should be remembered as happy.

Adi added that Ben Nun was "a wonderful, sweet, funny, beautiful, eternally optimistic girl who was always with friends. She was the glue the held all the friends together."

"I refuse to believe that it's you," wrote a friend of Ben Nun's on Instagram. "How do we say goodbye? I already miss you. Take care of us from up there."

"At the beginning, she had a hard time because she wanted to enlist in the Border Police, Ben Nun's commander Shahaf Katz told Ynet. "But very quickly, she fell in love and everyone fell in love with her. She was an incredible soldier, and she was meant to start commander training. She was the heart of the company, and now the whole company is crushed."

St.-Sgt. Ohad Dahan

Dahan was 20 and from Ofakim. He was posthumously promoted to staff-sergeant from sergeant.

Dahan was one of the three soldiers who engaged the terrorist in a firefight, ultimately killing him.

"We're not surprised that he jumped first and stormed [the terrorist," Dahan's uncle Shaul Dahan told Kan. "He defended everyone with his own body like he was taught. He is our hero. He was obsessed with the army - an outstanding soldier, an outstanding student and an outstanding son to his parents. He always said 'the brigade commander is my god, I would do everything for him' and he was proud of his combativeness."

"He was educated to love the country and care for the state," said Dahan's cousin Noam. "He was an outstanding student and always helped everyone. He will stay young forever. We are waiting for the investigation to understand what happened.

MK Almog Cohen said in a statement that he knows Dahan's family personally.

"This is a Zionist family who loves the people and the country and raised Ohad on those values," he said.

Shortly after the IDF publicized Dahan's name, the Ofakim municipality put out a statement of condolences.

"Ofakim is mourning and pained by the death of IDF soldier St.-Sgt. Ohad Dahan, a resident of the city, during a firefight on the Egyptian border," said the statement. "Dear Ohad worked courageously to locate the Egyptian terrorist who killed two soldiers and kill him."

The statement added that representatives of the municipality had been sent to support the family.

Ohad will be laid to rest on Sunday at noon in the Ofakim cemetery military plot.

St.-Sgt. Uri Itzhak Ilouz

The third soldier was identified as St.-Sgt. Uri Itzhak Ilouz who was 20 years old and from Safed. Like Dahan, he was posthumously promoted from sergeant.

Ilouz leaves behind parents, two sisters and a brother.

"A heavy and terrible sadness has befallen the city," said Safed Mayor Shuki Ohana. "Uri Ilouz, salt of the earth and a graduate from a local high school, did a year of national service in the Ma'ase Mechina. He enlisted in March of last year for meaningful military service in the Bardelas Battalion on the Egyptian border and finished a commanders course and was supposed to begin an officers course.

"There are no words that can comfort parents burying their child, no words that can explain the unimaginable pain. I, together with the entire city, share in the grief of the family - Shai and Liat Ilouz, Uri's sisters Eden and Gal and his brother Noam."
