Elohim אלהים = God אל separated from man (creation י finished by the son ם) by ignorance. When God calls men elohim he is saying they are separated from him by ignorance.

If you thing the OT is a literal-historical record, you already have the genre wrong. It is prophetic riddle hidden in literal-historical. It all speaks of Christ who reveals the invisible Father.
