House Republicans call on DOJ to turn over documents on FBI role in Trump investigation

House GOP members have called on the Department of Justice to turn over records regarding theFBI and its role with special counsel Jack Smith's investigation into former President Donald Trump.

Republican members of Congress, led by House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland Friday asking for details and records.

“The extent of the FBI’s bias and reckless disregard for the truth, which Special Counsel Durham laid out in painstaking detail, is nothing short of scandalous," Jordan wrote in the letter. "TheFBI has tried to dismiss the report’s findings by claiming to have ‘already implemented dozens of corrective actions’ to prevent similar misconduct in the future."

According to Jordan, Durham's report found no evidence of Russia collusion and the FBI hasn't given clear answers about its part in the Trump investigation.

“The FBI has tried to dismiss the report’s findings by claiming to have ‘already implemented dozens of corrective actions’ to prevent similar misconduct in the future,” Jordan stated. “The FBI’s window dressing is not enough.

Jordan has invited Durham to speak with the committee about the investigation, and he is scheduled to do so on June 21.

"Jordan is now conducting congressional oversight with a request that the DOJ disclose how many FBI agents are working under Smith on his investigation and what kind of resources the FBI has dedicated to the effort," a statement from the House Judiciary Committee website reads. The Judiciary chair gave the Justice Department two weeks to respond; the deadline is June 15.

White House says DOJ to challenge state laws that block transgender treatments for kids

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre says the Biden administration can and will use the Department of Justice to fight state laws that "target" transgender kids.

"This year alone, more than 600 anti-LGBTQI bills have been filed in statehouses across the country, and a significant portion of those bills target transgender youth," she said Friday. "As President Biden says, these young people are some of the bravest people he knows, but no one should have to be brave to be themselves."

She went on to say that the Biden administration is taking more steps to advance equality for the LGBTQ community and protect their civil rights.

"DOJ is actively supporting challenges to state laws that target transgender kids," she continued. "In light of the Dobbs decision, he took action to protect marriage equality by signing into law the Respect for Marriage Act and he continues to call on Congress to pass the Equality Act to enshrine civil rights protections for LGBTQI+ Americans in federal law."

Several states, including Texas and North Dakota, have taken action at the local level and banned transgender surgery for minors.

Jean-Pierre, who is a lesbian, said that this year has been a hard year for the LGBTQ community.

"This year has been really scary for our community," she said, adding that "people are being treated, threatened, intimidated and targeted for who they are and who they love."

There has been pushback against Jean-Pierre's assertions, according to Fox News. "Make no mistake: the federal government has been weaponized against parents that want to protect their children," a Twitter account representing Chicago’s Morning Answer radio program said while summarizing Jean-Pierre's comments.

McCarthy approval up to 50% after debt ceiling deal: poll

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is enjoying strong approval ratings after negotiating a compromise debt ceiling plan with President Joe Biden.

The House and Senate approved the compromise plan to cut spending in fiscal year 2024 and impose non-defense discretionary caps for 2025. McCarthy faced intense pressure from the conservative wing of his conference to fight for budgetary concessions. Many House conservatives were dissatisfied with the final legislation and 71 Republicans broke ranks to oppose the measure, though the plan secured bipartisan support in both chambers.

With the prospect of an imminent debt default seemingly averted, the California Republican earned a 50% approval rating in the latest Rasmussen Reports poll. McCarthy generally earned strong marks from his own party with 65% of Republicans approving of him compared to 43% of Democrats.

Moreover, 56% of likely U.S. voters approved of the McCarthy-led debt bill. A further 28% said Congress should have rejected the plan while 18% were unsure. The survey questioned 1,012 likely U.S. voters from May 30 to June 1.

The Rasmussen poll represents a continuation of a favorable trend for McCarthy, who held a net -12 approval rating according to an Economist/YouGov survey at the time. In mid-May, the same survey showed him with a net +4 favorability, representing a 16-point upswing.

(This is how stupid the public is and how effective the media fear campaign was.MTG is a traitor, power was always her goal. I hope she gets primaried out!)
