Several drones tried to attack Crimea – local leader

A crashed UAV has damaged property in the city of Dzhankoy in the north of the peninsula, Sergey Aksyonov says

Five drones were shot down overnight over Russia’s Crimea, and four others were interceptedby means of electronic warfare and forced to land, the region’s leader Sergey Aksyonov has said.

One of the destroyed UAVs crashed in the city of Dzhankoy in the north of the peninsula, Aksyonov said. Windows were shattered in three homes and several cars as a result, he added.

Anotherunexploded unmanned aircraft was discoveredon the territory of a private house, according to the Crimean leader. Some 50 people had to be evacuated from the area before the drone was deactivated, he wrote.

“There were no casualties or injuries as a result of the overnight attack. I ask everyone to remain calm and trust only reliable sources of information,” Aksyonov said.

Crimea and its largest city, Sevastopol, which hosts Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, have been frequently targeted by Ukrainian aerial and naval drones since the start of the conflict between Moscow and Kiev in February 2022.

A week ago, six UAVs were intercepted using electronic warfare, or shot down above the peninsula. In early May, at least ten drones targeted Sevastopol, but the assault was repelled by Russian forces.

Several UAVs were shot down in Dzhankoy in March, an incident that left one person wounded and caused damage to property. Back then, Aksyonov’s aide Oleg Kryuchkov insisted that there were no military installations near the affected area.

For months, Ukraine has been building up to a major counteroffensive that it claims will seek to recapture all territories lost to Russia, including Crimea, which overwhelmingly voted to join the Russian state in 2014 after a Western-backed coup in Kiev.

US Deputy Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland claimed a few months ago that Washington was “supporting”Ukrainian attempts to strike targets in Crimea. The peninsula has been turned into a military base with command posts, logistics depots and airfields by Moscow and has to be “demilitarized,” she insisted.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who serves as deputy head of the country’s Security Council, earlier suggested that threats against Crimea by Ukrainian officials were just “propaganda.”

However, he warned that if the peninsula is actually attacked, it could become “the basis for the use of all means of protection, including those provided for by the fundamentals of the doctrine of nuclear deterrence.”

Fyodor Lukyanov:Erdogan has won, what can the world, and Russia, expect from him now?The veteran leader knows Moscow well, and the Kremlin understands his agenda. But how will it play out this time?

Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s victory in the Turkish presidential election is supposed to mean there will be continuity in Ankara’s foreign policy. However, in this case, it applies not so much to the content as to the approach that will be taken: most probablyconstant manoeuvring in search of opportunities.

As a result, those preferences can change quite dramatically as circumstances transform, or when it becomes clear that they are not feasible.

In the 20 years he has been in power, theTurkish president's goalshave adjusted many times, sometimes quite diametrically, from Europeanization to Ottoman ideals, from promoting revolutions in the Middle East to actively rebuilding relations.

Turkish colleagues tend to dislike arguments by foreigners about Ankara's “neo-Ottomanism,” calling them superficial and often far-fetched. This is probably true. However, it is an undeniable fact that the most important events for the entire region aretaking place in the historical zone of Ottoman influence. And it is not possible to completely ignore centuries-old relationships.

At the same time, revolutionary changes are taking place… in the South Caucasus.Syriais emerging from diplomatic isolation, butnormalization with Türkiye, which occupies part of its territory, remains the main issue. Add to this the raging conflict in the Black Sea region…

Fears abound, but is there anything to reassure us? There is something. As we have discussed before, this diverse and noisy part of the world is now forced more than ever to rely on itself, to find its own solutions to its problems.Outsidersare reducing both their activity and influence.

The first point is that there are so many concerns, globally, thateven the strongest powershave to balance their capabilities and desires. The second is the result of the activities of external powers in general, and especially in recent decades.Even if we assumethat they have acted with the best of intentions (which in itself is not necessary, to put it mildly),the fruits are exceptionally inedible. It is clear that non-regional players will not be completely eliminated, but the balance of power is not shifting in their favor.

Relations between the leading statesand peoples of the region are now more important. That is why memories of the Ottoman period are in the air – the roots go back to that time. Of course, it is not even pointless to draw parallels, it… But the range of issues resonates, at least in part, with what has always been there.

Trends in the Arab World, and in Arab relations with Iran, offer hope for normalization. The roles of Russia and China – not leading, but supporting – could be a catalyst for positive trends. The story of the South Caucasus is far from over and promises much human drama… And so it follows that new opportunities are emerging.

Türkiye is a key player in this whole puzzle, whether it wants to be or not. The only question is its capacity, and it’s not entirely clear where the limits are here. The first andmost important thing Erdogan will have to deal with is the economy. The rather bleak current situation did not prevent his re-election, he cannot do anything else without economic growth. There is a complex interdependence between foreign policy ambitions and the ability to pay for them. But the resource base of a country likeTürkiye – transit-orientedand dependent on nature – depends on its ability to pursue a complex and multidirectional assertive policy.

Over the years, Erdogan has shown himself to be both an adventurous player and a prudent politician, capable of retreating when he realizes he has made a mistake. Russia is happy with this, althoughit should have no illusions about Ankara. Our interaction is not a cordial agreement, but an awareness that there is no escape from each other. However, this is a healthy awareness. And the manner of its implementation has already been worked out.

(Interesting:Putin seems to be sending a message to Erdogan, we are watching you!. Erdogan changed course recently from, he would not send arms to Ukraine, to they are considering sending arms to Ukraine. Turkey has great benefit from Russia’s gas pipeline and as a trading partner. Erdogan will be in a bad situation economically with Russia if he sends arms.Putin through this author, points out Syria to Erdogan, reminding him they still back Syria militarily, hence the mention of the Ottoman empire motivations. Russia is saying, “Fuck around & find out.)

Berlin issues demand to China

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius wants Beijing to end its alleged policy of recruiting ex-Bundeswehr pilots

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has said that he warned his Chinese counterpart, General Li Shangfu, against using former Bundeswehr pilots to train the Chinese military.

“I have made it clear that I expect this policy to be stopped immediately,” Pistorius told reporters at the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue security forum in Singapore on Saturday, as quoted by Reuters.

Berlin’s defense chief claimed that Li did not deny the practice of hiring former German pilots, but downplayed its significance. According to Der Spiegel magazine, the meeting between Pistorius and Li, which was scheduled to last 30 minutes, went on for more than an hour.

German media previously reported thatformer Bundeswehr service members have been finding jobs in Chinathrough companies in South Africa and New Zealand and werebeing paid large salariesto pass their knowledge to Chinese pilots.

Der Spiegel described one such supposed case on Friday. According to the publication, a retired officer referred to as Alexander H., who used to train pilots to operate the Eurofighter Typhoon in Germany, was thought to have moved to China, where he allegedly trained pilots at an air base in Qiqihar.

The fact that former Air Force officers are training fighter pilots in China is an outrage. We can’t accept this,” Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, chair of the parliamentary defense committee, told Der Spiegel.

Beijing has not commented on the matter. However, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin denied knowledge of such employment last year when responding to similar allegations made by the UK.

In 2022, Britain’s defense ministry said it would take measures against potential employment of former RAF service members in China.Australia said last year that it would investigate reports of its own retired Air Force pilotstraining Chinese military personnel.

Relations between China and NATO have deteriorated significantly in recent years as both sides accuse each other of stoking tensions in the Taiwan Strait. The US-led alliance has described Beijing as a threat, while China accused the West of having a “Cold War mentality.”

(Bannon said yesterday the US, UK and Australia, along with Germany are owned by China, he’s right, even down to their retired military!)

They could destroy all of Ukraines arms and even their armies, but that would be all out war and NATO countries wouldn't hesitate to race in to Ukraine for all out WWIII.

Ukraine lacks weapons to launch counteroffensive – Zelensky’s aide

Igor Zhovkva urges EU countries to do more to help Kiev in the fight against Moscow

Ukraine needs more weapons and ammunition to be able to carry out a successful counteroffensive against the Russian forces, the deputy head of President Vladimir Zelensky’s office has said.

In an interview with British newspaper The Times on Saturday, Igor Zhovkva was asked why the much-anticipated operation by Ukraine, aimed at retaking land lost to Russia, still hasn’t been launched.

“If you want to start a successful counteroffensive you need everything at your disposal, including artillery, armored vehicles and tanks,so probably we don’t have enough,”he replied.

“More weapons is the No 1 topic in each and every conversation” that Zelensky had during his numerous foreign trips over the past month, Zhovkva, who is also the Ukrainian president’s top foreign affairs adviser, stressed.

“Every country knows what kind of weapons we need from them, to protect our territory, stop the rockets,” the official added.

He also suggested that Russia has intensified its missile and drone campaign across Ukraine in recent months in a bid to deter the offensive by Kiev’s troops, which was expected to begin in spring.

The UK “now is one of the leading countries in showing real incentive and courage in how to really bring victory to my country,” he stated, adding that other nations need to do more to assist Kiev.

Sorry, but the European countries are still too slow and not doing enough with sanctions”against Russia, Zhovkva insisted.

(EU countries are in dire straights economically because of sanctions. When are these countries going to realize Ukraine is filled with ungrateful leeches and vampires?)

Zelensky told the Wall Street Journal on Saturday that the Ukrainian military was“ready” for the counteroffensive, but did not say when exactly it will start.

He also pointed out that Kiev would have wanted to see more weapons provided by the West, but that “we can’t wait for months” to launch the assault.

Among other things,Ukraine needs 50 US-made Patriot air defensebatteries to sufficiently protect its cities and troops on the battlefield ahead of the counteroffensive, Zelensky said.

With the price ofa single Patriot battery estimated at $1.1 billion, the overall cost of the demand would be around $55 billion, which is more than the total amount of American military aid allocated to Kiev since the start of the conflict.

The Ukrainian leader acknowledged that Russia’s air superiority would leaveKiev’s troops exposed and “a large number of soldiers will die” during the counteroffensive.

(They should just surrender, countries have been sucked dry, the US if smart, can’t do this any longer. The war is over and Ukraine knows it, thats why they are using drones for terrorism.)

China rebukes US after Taiwan Strait near-collision

A Chinese warship came within 150 yards of colliding with a US destroyer as tensions flare around Taiwan

China’sforeign minister has defended the actions of its navy after itsailed a warship into the path of American and Canadian vesselsconducting joint exercises in the Taiwan Strait on Saturday, saying the so-called ‘freedom of navigation’ patrols are an act of aggression towards Beijing.

In an address to a host of global defense officials at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on Sunday, General Li Shangfu said Beijing was unconcerned by what he called “innocent passage” but that it must “prevent attempts that try to use the freedom of navigation [patrols], that innocent passage, to exercise hegemony of navigation.”

Li’s comments follow an incident on Saturday in which a Chinese warship reportedly came within 150 yards (137 meters) of the US destroyer USS Chung-Hoon and a Canadian vessel with which it was conducting exercises. TheChinese ship sailed into the path of the US vesseland warned it that there would be a collision if it didn’t change course, according to Canada’s Global News, whose reporters witnessed the near-miss.

After receiving a warning from the US destroyer, the Chinese warship altered its courseat the last moment to avoid a collision, reports indicate.

Speaking at the same conference in Singapore on Saturday, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said Washington would not “flinch in the face of bullying or coercion,”and that it would continue to maintain a presence in the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea – countering China’s territorial claims by underscoring that the areas which were the source of Saturday’s dispute are international waters.

Li, however, insisted that the US and its allies were responsible for an increase in tensions in the region and advised Washington to take “good care of your own territorial airspace and waters.” He added: “In China we always say, ‘Mind your own business.’” (He’s threatening US territorial waters, are they going to send war ships our way. A guest on Napolitano said China was pushing for a war!)

In what was his first international address since becoming China’s defense minister in March, Li also emphasized Beijing’s position on Taiwan, calling it the “core of our core interests” and said it would never hesitate to “defend our legitimate rights and interests.”

Beijing has previously expressed frustration at what it sees as Washington meddling in its affairs, particularly as it pertains to Taiwan – disputed territory over which China claims sovereignty as part of its ‘One China’ policy.

The United States diplomatically recognizes China’s territorial rights to Taiwan but Beijing has objected to Washington providing Taipei with defense training and conducting diplomatic meetings with Taiwan’s leadership.

Why Elon Musk’s visit is important for China

(Musk is being used by China to propagandize other US businesses to take their money there. This article itself is propagandaor is it a warning to the US? Interesting photo!)

Twitter owner and Tesla CEO Elon Musk went on a tour of China this week. It was his first visit to the country since 2019, after a hiatus during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Musk met with China’s foreign minister Qin Gang, before later meeting Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang.

Although in practice it was all about business, the political symbolism of the trip on both sides is unmistakeable. Beijing did not keep Musk’s visit low-key nor leave it by the wayside, but placed it on a megaphone and amplified it aggressively through its media channels. It wanted the world to know very clearly that not only was a major American tech figure and entrepreneur in town, but was engaging with its leaders.

When was the last time an American politician or official visited Beijing and got such a reception? While not discounting the fact that few will do so for political reasons, even those who do, be it Anthony Blinken or Wendy Sherman, are given a frosty and hostile reception. In fact, since the “spy balloon” incident, China has even gone as far as putting high-level communications with the US on ice completely.

But that does not mean China is not interested in engaging with the US at all. Rather,China sees engaging with American politicians as a waste of time, and instead sees greater political gain in using high profile individualssuch as Elon Musk to drive practical and results-based engagement. Apple CEO Tim Cook also conducted a similar trip to China earlier this year. What is the purpose and message? Despite surging tensions and uncertainties, Beijing continues to see the American business community, who are not Anti-China by nature of what they do, as its best bet.

Right now,US politics is in a race to the bottom concerning China. The atmosphere of US foreign policy debate is lethally toxic, lost in a maelstrom of paranoia, irrationality and mass hysteria over Beijing. This has created an echo chamber which has made it impossible to improve relations on a political level.

But the business community is different, becauseAmerican companies see financial opportunity in Chinaand its market, something they have engaged with for over 40 years. Behind the scenes, businessmen attempt to lobby politicians to ensure their interests are preserved, even if they aren’t having much luck when it comes to China, and this has made them perhaps the only consistent voice in opposing the anti-China rhetoric pushed by Washington DC over the past few years. While of course they are forced to contemplate the political risks of engagement, a factor they cannot control and that politicians can use to coerce them, they are a moderating voice of reason. (China sees financial opportunity to subvert and destroy America by luring US companies there. They make 100x the money the business’s receives. Companies and their leaders are worshipping the money God over patriotism!)

And on that premise, someone like Elon Musk is very important. Although his political viewpoint is very right wing, it is undeniable that he has established himself as one of themost influential businessmen in the US right now, and fortunately for Beijing he has an open mind and amicable attitude towards China. In taking control of Twitter, one of the world’s most influential social media platforms, Musk has pursued a policy of free speech which has rolled back anti-China measures implemented by its predecessor CEO Jack Dorsey.

It is no surprise given these factors thatChina has made a political show out of courting Musk, realising figures like him can indirectly “steer” the US-China relationship towards safer ground andset a precedent for other businessmen too, sending the message that despite everything that is going on China is still open for business. In doing so,Beijing sees the co-opting of the business community as a critical forcein resisting a “decoupling” push by the US, as well as what it describes as a “Cold War mentality” and therefore a moderating factor. If politicians have become completely unreasonable, this is the response.

This ironically has made Musk more vital to the US-China relationshipthan America’s ambassador himself, Nicholas Burns. Thus, while China is politically infuriated at the US right now, it is not giving up hope that in many areas, engagement with the US can still be in its fundamental interests.
