What kind of "skin" on the plane? Was it able to tilt as part of a maneuver?

The ending of the "Plot" section contains what seem two direct references:

So before posting this, anon checked to see if Barbara and John Rumpel had other children. Looks like they lost a 19-year-old daughter in 1994, in a scuba diving accident in Florida.

Might have been a sacrifice? (Was the plane crash? 7/10, etc…) That text you called out from the image might have hit the nail on the head!
