back in the day the airline would conveniently "lose" your luggage. forget to pull it off the plane at your stop. or whatever. a conveniently plausibly deniable way of doing a thorough search through that luggage. if non-destructive searching is all that was required then you might get it back in a few hours, days, or weeks. If destructive searching is called for then you either get it back damaged or it stays permanently "lost". never bought all the occurrences of that stuff back then. and don't buy all the ticketing system meltdowns resulting in massive flight delays today. when an airline is having a "computer problem" then, more often than not, it's gonna be a three letter agnecy search of the system being the true cause.
