RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — 8News sources have confirmed that two people are dead, 13 people are injured and one person is in custody following a reported shooter situation at Altria Theater that took place during Huguenot High School’s graduation ceremony on Tuesday.
There was a reported shooting at the Altria Theater located at Laurel Street and Franklin Street around 5 p.m., according to Richmond School Board member Jonathan Young.
Huguenot High School had a graduation scheduled at the Altria beginning at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, June 6.
Two people are dead and thirteen others are injured, a source told 8News.
One person is in custody, but no suspect information has been released.
Police and SWAT units are on scene. Anyone nearby should avoid the area, but police are now reporting there is no immediate threat to the public.
A witness told 8News they heard at least 30 shots fired.
“Everyone literally started running for their lives,” the witness explained. She said she believes at least one of the people shot was a graduate.
Thomas Jefferson High School also had a graduation scheduled for later in the evening, but it has now been cancelled.
All Richmond schools have been closed for Wednesday, June 7.
