Ukraine attempted to attack homes linked to Russian officers – NBC

At least one of the buildings hit by Kiev’s drones in Moscow was tied to Foreign Intelligence Service, the report says

A Ukrainian drone attack that damaged several residential buildings in Moscow last week was likely an attempt to target residences of Russian intelligence officers, NBC reported on Tuesday, citing two US sources.

According to Strider Technologies, a US-based tech company which specializes in gathering intel, at least one of the homes hit by drones had ties to Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR). It is said to be owned by a state-affiliated entity which allegedly had been contracted by an SVR-linked military unit.

However, there was no indication whether the intelligence officer’s home was damaged, or whether any Russian operatives were injured, the report says.

This was not some random attack on a wealthy suburb,” Eric Levesque, the Strider Technologies co-founder said, describing the raid as a crucial development in psychological warfare within the Ukraine conflict.

On May 30, Moscow mayor Sergey Sobyanin said that the drone raid on the Russian capital resulted in several buildings sustaining minor damage, but did not cause any serious injuries among local residents.

Later, Russia’s defense ministry accusedUkraine of launching “a terrorist attack” on the capital involving eight drones, which were either downed by air defenses, or suppressed by electronic warfare measures and deviated off course. Kiev denied direct involvement, but cheered the incident.

Meanwhile, Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov suggested that the attack was meant as a response to Moscow’s prior strikes on Ukrainian “decision-making centers.”

Shortly after the attack, UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly claimed that Kiev had a “legitimate right” to strike targets on Russian soil, while the White House struck a more cautious tone, saying that “as a general matter, we do not support attacks inside Russia.”

The latter statement, however, failed to convince Anatoly Antonov, Russia’s ambassador to Washington, who noted that thedrone raid was “in line with the general policy of the collective West to subvert our country.”

The report follows a CNN claim on Monday, citing sources, that Ukraine had set up an intelligence network on Russian territory, providing its members with drones to stage attacks on various targets inside the country.

Ukraine fires more than 500 shells at Belgorod Region – governor

The strikes did not cause casualties but did damage houses and infrastructure, Vyacheslav Gladkov has said

Ukrainian forces fired more than 500 artillery shells across the border into Russia’s Belgorod Region on Tuesday, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov has said. The strikes did not cause any injuries but did damage residential buildings, he added.

In a statement on Telegram on Wednesday, Gladkov claimed 460 shells of various types had been fired at the Shebekino district alone, where local authorities recorded 26 explosive devices that had been dropped from drones.

“There were no casualties. In the town of Shebekino, strikes weremainly directed at residential areas,” the governor wrote. The exact number of homes and vehicles damaged is still unclear, although the shelling destroyed an agricultural facility, he added.

The settlement of Novaya Tavolzhanka in the same district was hit by 57 Ukrainian shells, resulting in 10 households suffering damage, Gladkov said.

Ukrainian forces also launched attacks on the village of Kozinka in theGrayvoron district, rupturing a gas pipeline and causing the authorities to shut off suppliesto several streets.

Several other areas were targeted in the region, while Russian air defense systems destroyed two targets over the city of Belgorod, according to Gladkov. “No one was hurt. The falling fragments damaged three cars,” he added.

Ukrainian attacks continued into Wednesday, with Shebekino bearing the brunt once again. Gladkov said that the town had come under an intense bombardment by a Soviet-era Grad multiple rocket system. While the barrage did not cause any injuries, 40 shells hit an industrial zone, resulting in a fire, with another 20 shells landing across the town, he noted.

Kiev has significantly intensified its attacks on Belgorod Region and other border areas in recent weeks, resulting in civilian casualties and widespread destruction. Last month, the region was also targeted by a deadly cross-border raid.

Ukraine denied responsibility for the incursion, claiming it was an independent operation by collaborationist forces from the ‘Freedom of Russia Legion’ and ‘Russian Volunteer Corps’ (RDK), which are made up of fighters with neo-Nazi backgrounds.
