Several children injured in knife attack in French Alps

Four children and one adult were injured, and a man was arrested. Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne is traveling to the scene in the city of Annecy.

Five people including four children were injured in a stabbing attack in the city of Annecy in the French Alps, security sources told Agence France-Presse (AFP) on Thursday, June 8.

A man armed with a knife attacked a group of children aged around three years old at 9:45 am Paris time on Thursday at a park near the lake in the city, a security source who asked not to be named and a local official told AFP. Two of the children and one adult were left with life-threatening injuries.

Both police and the Interior Ministry official cautioned that the number of wounded could evolve because the full details weren't yet clear.

Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin tweeted that the culprit "has been arrested thanks to the rapid reaction of security forces." A local lawmaker, Antoine Armand, tweeted that children were attacked on a playground. He called the attack "abominable."

In Paris, lawmakers interrupted a debate to hold a moment of silence for the victims. An aide for Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said she is traveling to the scene of the stabbing attack.

President Emmanuel Macron called it an act of "absolute cowardice." He wrote on Twitter: "Children and an adult are between life and death. The nation is in shock. Our thoughts are with them, their families and the emergency services."
