One big issue for me in all of this, which I haven't seen too much focus on here (not saying it hasn't been touched, I don't keep up religiously), is how the natural state of humans differs from our social roles and expectations. I can see two significant ways in which this is important to understanding our current state of affairs. First, when there is conflict between human instinct and how we live in modern times it likely diminishes people's ability to perform day in and day out, if that conflict is significant they are likely to be a mere shadow of what they would ordinarily have been. The second is that discrepancies between the natural state of man and what is expected of us could likely manifest in truly aberrant behaviours, which may go a long ways to explain the prevalence of depravity among those who are constantly under a microscope socially. It would seem to me that these factors together could do a lot to explain the prevalence of blackmail as a tool for controlling those most fully integrated into unnatural spheres of society. This also leads me to consider the reasoning behind which forgiveness has played such an important role in the development of our society.

It has been obscured, but I do not believe it has been forgotten entirely, which is the entire reason that the more unnatural our society becomes, the more incoherent it becomes.

Much truth is hidden not by convoluted sensationalism, such as demons or aliens, but rather by being so ordinary that it escapes the attention of those who seek the excitement of the supernatural.
