#OnThisDay in 1967, Israeli forces coordinated an aerial and naval attack that sunk the unarmed USS Liberty - a US spy ship 12 miles off the coast of the Sinai Peninsula. 34 US crew members on board the ship died as a result.

 

The ship, whose crew was under the command of the National Security Agency (NSA), was intercepting communications at the height of the Six-Day War when it came under direct Israeli assault.

 

Israel claimed it mistook the ship for an Egyptian vessel.

 

Cpt. Ward Boston (taken from the US Congressional Record) stated that:

 

"The evidence was clear. Both Admiral Kidd and I believed with certainty that this attack, which killed 34 American sailors and injured 172 others, was a deliberate effort to sink an American ship and murder its entire crew. I am certain that the Israeli pilots that undertook the attack, as well as their superiors who had ordered the attack, were aware that the ship was American."

 

Though the US and Israeli governments concluded that the attack was an 'accident,' many, including the survivors, maintain that it was a deliberate attack.

 

Survivors received gag orders forbidding them from ever talking about what they endured that day.

 

The NSA has concealed even the most minor details surrounding the event.

 

Until this day, Israel has not been held accountable.
