>i think shaming people more often needs to make a comeback
>it's a soft ass world
when i went to college, professors were a lot more like Drill Instructors at a boot camp. not quite, but they definitely were not shy about humiliating a student in front of the entire class if that student did something (academically) to deserve it, like fail to complete an assignment, lay a goose egg on an exam, etc etc. and it WORKS… public humiliation is a fantastic tool to motivate lazy jackasses. when you're called upon to go to the board and explain to the rest of the class how to solve a problem, and you stand there clueless, with your ass flapping in the breeze, and the whole class snickering at you while you sweat bullets… most people either drop out or else make damned sure they're never caught unprepared again.
btw, either outcome is the proper one. as a prof myself for the past 45yrs, i can say with without reservation that 80-90% of students have no business being in college. they're wasting their parents money or burying themself in student loans they will spend a lifetime paying back working at the minimum wage job they COULD have gotten as a high-school dropout. US dept of educ stats back me up, too, because it's a fact that 5 out of 6 college grads NEVER get a job related to their "diploma," a fact that i frequently repeated to my students, much to the displeasure of the admin.
