Port of Seattle Halts Operations Amidst ILWU-PMA Clash

Reuters June 10, 2023

June 10 (Reuters) – The Pacific Maritime Association (PMA), which represents terminal operators, said in a tweet on Saturday that coordinated and disruptive work actions led by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) have shut down cargo operations at the Port of Seattle.

“On the first shift today, the ILWU refused to dispatch any longshore workers to container terminals, the PMA said, resulting in the shutdown of the port.

The ILWU, however, said that the West Coast ports are open and accused the PMA of “leveraging one-sided information to influence the process.”

“Despite what you are hearing from PMA, West Coast ports are open as we continue to work under our expired collective bargaining agreement,” said ILWU International President Willie Adams.

Unions are seeking a pay increase that reflects workers’ contribution to the ocean shipping industry’s record profits from the pandemic cargo boom. They also want added compensation for the hours worked since their contract expired.

West Coast ports stretching from California to Washington state are critical to the U.S. supply chains and the economy. More than 22,000 dockworkers at those trade gateways have been working without a contract since July.

The largest U.S. business group on Friday urged President Joe Biden to intervene immediately and appoint an independent mediator to address a protracted West Coast ports labor dispute.

U.S. Chamber of Commerce CEO Suzanne Clark in a letter to Biden cited “continued and potentially expanded service disruptions at these ports heading into peak shipping season.”

The Port of Seattle did not immediately reply to a Reuters request for comment.

Negative on the bird farm

But…. USNS SACAGAWEA transmitting port of departure JAX, but she's down southeast of Daytona now.

Too late in the year for a carrier to take part in UNITAS. If there's one rounding Florida heading into the Gulf then I'd say time to carrier qual some junior birdmen.

I'll keep an eye out

APEEL • Trans-Fat/ Heavy-Metal Coated Bill Gates DARPA Produce

Dylan Eleven June 6, 2023

I don’t know about you, but I’m not into eating anything coated by Bill Gates. ‘No thank you’ to trans-fat/ heavy-metal coated DARPA produce!

You may have recently purchased an avocado or an apple with a ‘new’ sticker – APEEL – which represents a new “protective coating.” What exactly is this product protecting? And is your health worth the hit just so your lemons are okay for a few more days?

Once you’ve learned the ABCs of Apeel, you can make a well-informed, health-conscious decision to say “Hell no!”

Edipeel ™ aka Apeel is a layer of processed fatty acids sprayed on the outside of fruits and vegetables post-harvest “to lock in freshness” and prevent them from oxidizing and going rancid.

According to Apeel’s website:

“Apeel keeps produce fresh for longer, thanks to the help of a little extra ‘peel.’ Our plant-based protection slows water loss and oxidation, the primary causes of spoilage… Apeel is composed entirely of purified monoglycerides and diglycerides, edible compounds that can be found in a variety of foods. They are safe to eat as verified by regulatory authorities around the world, including Health Canada, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the World Health Organization (WHO). In fact, they are so safe they can be found in products designed for the most sensitive populations, including infant formula and nutrition shakes for the elderly.”

They claim Apeel is fully edible, but maybe that’s because we’ve become accustomed to eating poisons. It’s a crock.

When I tried to suss out the details about what is used to make Apeel, the information on their website and product information sheets was scant, to say the least!

The assurance Apeel gives us is typical mumbo jumbo jargon: “Apeel products do not contain hazardous ingredients that will cause harm to people or the environment within the context of their intended use.”

The Bill Gates company, which was started in 2012, is straight-up lying.

They list monoglycerides and diglycerides. Does anyone remember how horrible TRANS fats are for your health? And that New York City BANNED them from restaurants just a few years ago? Trans fats harden the arteries and can lead to arteriosclerosis. Monoglycerides and diglycerides may contribute to inflammation in the body. Inflammation has been linked to a range of chronic diseases including heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.

Additionally, the manufacturing of this “safe” food additive uses “processing aid residuals,” which are essentially heavy metals like lead, nickel, cadmium, mercury, toxic ash, and arsenic. So when consuming produce coated with Apeel, you are eating highly-processed overt fats, which contain toxic heavy metals. And then, along the way, they add different solvents to help with emulsification. So to me, this seems like a toxic poisoning operation.

Consider that there is no way to remove Apeel. You can’t wash it off. You can’t use other chemicals to get it off. You can’t mechanically rub it off and of course, it seeps into the fruits and vegetables.

And if you want to peel the Apeel, do keep in mind that the peel can drastically increase your nutrient intake as they frequently contain more nutrients than the rest of the fruit and veggies. For example, leaving the peel on a raw apple gives it about 332% more vitamin K, 142% vitamin A, and 115% more vitamin C than the peeled version!

And if you think you will just spring for organic, Apeel can be used on USDA Certified Organic produce. What a true travesty! Furthermore, you may not even know you’re eating Apeel-coated produce. Labeling laws and requirements vary from country to country and state to state. That means the product may or may NOT have the Apeel logo on the produce stickers. You won’t know unless you ask your produce manager. And they likely may not know either.

Countries selling produce coated with Apeel include the United States, Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Peru, Spain, Sweden, Norway, China, Australia, South Africa, Poland, and Japan. The EU, Switzerland, UK, and Norway are only allowing this coating to be applied to fruits and vegetables that have outer peels that are usually not eaten, while the US and other countries are allowing it on everything.

Apeel has already secured the following partnerships:

Nature’s Pride (a large importer of Europe’s avocados)

Sage Fruit Co. (Washington State organic apple producer)

Del Monte (avocados)

Eco Farms (avocados)

Del Rey (avocados)

Horton Fruit Company (avocados)

RV Aguacates (avocados)

Alpine Fresh (asparagus)

Beta (asparagus)

Farm Direct Supply (asparagus)

La Venta (asparagus)

SiCar Farms (limes)

Many other fruits and vegetables including tomatoes, leafy greens, cucumbers, raspberries, as well as citrus can use the Edipeel coating, with undoubtedly more produce being added in the future. https://www.apeel.com/find-us even offers a store locator to find where their products are carried near you.

Apeel is (or will be) available at the following grocers:

Costco

Trader Joes

Gelsons

Ralphs

Sprouts

Vons

Walmart

Whole Foods

Kroger

Harps Foods

Wakefern

Price Right

NATO begins largest air exercise in history

By Joshua Askew with AFP • Updated: 12/06/2023

NATO will begin its largest-ever air exercise on Monday.

The series of aerial manoeuvres being coordinated by Germany is intended to show the strength and unity of the Western military alliance, set against the backdrop of the Ukraine war.

The "Air Defender 23" exercise will run until 23 June, bringing together some 250 military aircraft from 25 NATO members and partner states, including Japan and Sweden.

Up to 10,000 people will take part in the exercises, which are intended to strengthen interoperability and protection against drones and cruise missiles in the event of an attack on cities, airports or ports located on NATO territory.

The drill was designed in 2018, partly in response to Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea, though it's not specifically targeting "anyone", said Army Chief General Ingo Gerhartz of the German Air Force.

Message to Putin

NATO is determined to defend "every centimetre" of its territory, said Gerhartz. But he added it will not send any flight "in the direction of Kaliningrad", the Russian enclave bordering NATO members Poland and Lithuania.

“We are a defensive alliance and that is how this exercise is planned,” insisted the general.

Yet the manoeuvres will also aim to send a message to Russia, according to the US Ambassador in Germany, Amy Gutmann.

“I would be very surprised if a world leader did not take note of what this shows in terms of the spirit of this alliance, what the strength of this alliance means, and that includes Mr. Putin,” she told reporters.

“By synchronising ourselves, we multiply our strength.”

Russia's war against Ukraine has galvanised the US-led military alliance created nearly 75 years ago to confront the Soviet Union.

Finland and Sweden - traditionally officially neutral, though closely aligned with NATO - asked to join after Russia invaded Ukraine last year.

German General Gerhartz noted many pilots would be working together for the first time.

"It's about nurturing the old relationships we have, but also building new relationships," he said.

“It is about establishing what it means to face a great power in the context of a competition between great powers”.

Potential travel disruption

In an email seen by Euronews, Wizz Air warned customers flying from Latvia to Britain the exercise may impact multiple European airspaces.

It urged flyers to check their website before travelling to the airport.

"Even though these circumstances are beyond our control, we apologise for any potential inconvenience caused and we will work hard to minimise any travel disruptions."

Asked about potential disruptions to civilian air travel during the exercise, General Gerhartz insisted planners would do "everything in their power" to limit flight delays or cancellations, with school holidays starting in parts of Germany.
