Meet Jerry Holland, the incoming Supervisor of Elections in Duval County, Florida, who assumes that office on July 1, 2023. But this isn’t Jerry’s first time at the bat of public service in Duval County. Having served on the Jacksonville City Council, including serving as the President of the City Council, and other local commissions important to the residents of Duval County, Jerry was Supervisor of Elections in Duval County from 2005, when he served out the term of his predecessor, and was then twice elected to the office. In 2015, Jerry was elected as the Duval County Property Appraiser, which oversees the property tax laws of the state of Florida and Duval County. Jerry was unopposed when he ran again for Supervisor of Elections this year.
In this Episode of Who’s Counting, Cleta talks with Jerry about how election officials can restore the trust and faith of the citizens in the election process. They talk about a wide range of issues of concern to election integrity activists and leaders: the security of voting technology, ensuring that only legally eligible citizens vote, making sure that the election systems and procedures are fair to all voters, balancing access to the polls with protecting the integrity of the process, cleaning voter rolls, and more. Most importantly, according to Jerry, is that election officials and administrators adhere to a commitment to transparency and accountability. And Jerry notes that some of the mistrust that has arisen regarding the election system in 2020 arose from actions of election officials, such as covering the election office windows to keep out citizen observation of the election process.
Jerry was a strong leader for the integrity of Duval County’s elections during his previous tenure as Supervisor of Elections, and has renewed his commitment to working with the election integrity volunteers in Florida today. A shining example of the right approach with the right principles, Jerry Holland will no doubt be a welcome member of the Florida SOE network – and a leader and example to his colleagues in other counties.

Despite Comey Assurances, Vast Bulk of Weiner Laptop Emails Were Never Examined
When then-FBI Director James Comey announced he was closing the Hillary Clinton email investigation for a second time just days before the 2016 election, he certified to Congress that his agency had “reviewed all of the communications” discovered on a personal laptop used by Clinton’s closest aide, Huma Abedin, and her husband, Anthony Weiner.
At the time, many wondered how investigators managed over the course of one week to read the “hundreds of thousands” of emails residing on the machine, which had been a focus of a sex-crimes investigation of Weiner, a former Congressman.
Comey later told Congress that “thanks to the wizardry of our technology,” the FBI was able to eliminate the vast majority of messages as “duplicates” of emails they’d previously seen. Tireless agents, he claimed, then worked “night after night after night” to scrutinize the remaining material.
But virtually none of his account was true, a growing body of evidence reveals. …

June 7, 2023 – Former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot will serve as a Richard L. and Ronay A. Menschel Senior Leadership Fellow at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health during the fall semester of 2023.
Lightfoot served as mayor of Chicago from May 2019 to May 2023. She made history as the city’s first African American, female, and open gay mayor. During her term, she worked to safeguard public health and minimize economic impact from the COVID-19 pandemic and tackled health equity issues—topics she’ll address in a Harvard Chan School fall course on health policy and leadership. As a Fellow, she’ll also hold regular office hours to meet with students, faculty, and staff during her time on campus.
In a June 1 Chicago Sun-Times article, Eric Andersen, director of the Senior Leadership Fellows Program, noted that the School was interested in bringing Lightfoot on board as a Fellow because, “as mayor and as a leader she faced many pressing public health issues, most notable navigating the pandemic.” He added, “We believe our students will benefit from her experiences, insights, and knowledge of leadership decision-making.” …

Archaeologists discover 6-inch stone penis used in medieval times

Phallic-shaped objects apparently weren’t always just for sexual pleasure: Spanish archaeologists have found a stone penis that may have been used to sharpen weapons in medieval Spain.
“It is an interesting object because it is unusual,” Darío Peña-Pascual, an archaeologist with Arbore Arqueoloxía, the organization that found the willy-shaped whetstone, told Live Science.
The team discovered the 6-inch doppelwanger in the ruins of the Tower of Meira in the Ria de Vigo, a river estuary in the southern part of the Spanish autonomous state Galicia.
This fortification was one of over 130 castles and towers destroyed during the Irmandiño revolts of the 15th century, in which peasants rose up against the ruling class, ArtNews reported.
Peña-Pascual said the object’s purpose was easy to identify because it retained “traces of wear on one side compatible with its use as a sharpening stone.”
While archaeologists frequently find whetstones at medieval excavation sites all over the world, this one’s penile shape made it stick out. …
