Penn State professor accused of committing sexual acts with an animal in PA state forest

A longtime Penn State professor was charged Tuesday after an investigation into trail camera footage showing a man performing sexual acts with a dog in Rothrock State Forest.

Themis Matsoukas, 64, of State College, was caught on camera April 13 committing sexual acts with his dog near the restrooms at Rothrock State Forest, according to a criminal complaint filed by the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

Matsoukas was identified by park rangers by his North Face backpack, which was visible in the camera footage from the April 13 incident. The backpack was also present in images depicting Matsoukas nude from the waist down, except for socks and shoes, in images from trail cameras dating as far back as 2014, according to the complaint.

The professor of chemical engineering — who earned his Ph.D. from Michigan — has been with Penn State since 1991. During that time, he’s written several books, published dozens of journal articles and won at least three teaching awards, including the Premier Teaching Award from the Penn State Engineering Alumni Society in 2017.

A Penn State spokesperson said the university planned to issue a statement later Wednesday but, as of 4 p.m., the Centre Daily Times has not received one. It is unknown at this time whether Matsoukas remains employed by the university, although he remains listed in the Penn State directory. This story will be updated once a statement is released.

Rangers served a search warrant to Matsoukas at his home in State College on June 9. According to the complaint, Matsoukas was “visibly nervous” and repeatedly told the rangers “I’m done, I’m dead, you don’t understand, I do it to blow off steam.”

During the execution of the search warrant, rangers found “all items listed” in the warrant, including the backpack and a ski mask that was visible in the April 13 camera footage.

His attorney, Matthew McClenahen, said Wednesday “it would be inappropriate to make any comment at this time.”

Matsoukas was charged with misdemeanor charges of open lewdness, indecent exposure and sexual intercourse with an animal, and summary charges of cruelty to animals and disorderly conduct. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 19 in Huntingdon County.

Transgender activist no longer welcome at White House after going topless at Biden event

WASHINGTON (AP) — Transgender advocate Rose Montoya is no longer welcome at White House events after posting on social media a video of herself and two others going topless for a time at Saturday's Pride Month celebration on the South Lawn.

“The behavior was simply unacceptable,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Tuesday. “It was unfair to the hundreds of attendees who were there to celebrate their families.”

Speaking at the White House press briefing, Jean-Pierre said, “Individuals in the video certainly will not be invited to future events." The White House spokeswoman said the bare-chested display “was not a normal thing that has happened under this administration.”

President Joe Biden hosted the event to show the administration's support of the LGBTQ+ community. There has recently been a push by some Republican leaders at the state level to restrict drag shows and limit the options for youth who are seeking to transition their genders.

Biden said Saturday that he had a message for the entire community, but especially for transgender children: “You are loved. You are heard. You’re understood. And you belong.”

Parts of his speech appeared in the video posted on social media by Montoya, whose Instagram biography identifies her as an educator, model and actor.

Montoya defended her post on Instagram and Twitter, saying that “going topless in Washington, DC is legal and I fully support the movement in freeing the nipple.” She said critics of her toplessness affirmed that she is, in fact, a woman, as a man would not face similar pushback. She said she had “zero intention of trying to be vulgar or be profane in anyway," adding that she covered her nipples with her hands in the video “just to play it safe.”
