Been buying both and half grass fed steers and free range hogs for 12 years. I find the price per/lb to be much cheaper than beef and pork from grocery stores. Last steer I bought came to $4.29/lb across all cuts from prime rib to ground beef. Taste is far better than store bought. I have a choice of processors but all are excellent and double vacuum seal all packages with labels inside and it's all frozen at -25F when I pick it up. (Take gloves and several coolers.)
There are dozens of ranchers in my area and all offer samples at cost before you commit to a bigger order.
Just remember you need a good freezer, a freezer alarm in case it quits working for some reason and a small generator in case the power goes out for too long. A good local supply of dry ice can stand in for a generator. Be prepared to buy a new freezer if your craps out. I only buy vintage freezers from the 1970's or earlier. Reliable as fuck (no computer boards) and they get much colder than new shit.
