Stephanie Wilkinson's actions would make perfect sense if she were about to perpetrate insurance fraud, such as by soliciting or even committing an attack on her own property.
By not only ejecting the woman and her children from the restaurant, but also forming a mob to harass and chase Sarah Huckabee Sanders from the downtown Lexington area, Wilkinson went far, far beyond the normal scope of putting a target on her own back. Wilkinson is not just asking but begging for trouble for her own restaurant, the Red Hen.
What makes it more outrageous is Wilkinson's position as head of her downtown merchants' association, Main Street Lexington, a non-profit collective presumably with the primary mission of attracting customers to downtown Lexington.
Why on earth would the president of the downtown marketing organization make international news by chasing a family literally out of said downtown? And by convening a mob to hound the family, no less?
Unless Stephanie Wilkinson is a very stupid woman, the only explanation is that she wishes to create a perfect storm of such bad publicity that something extremely uncivil is not only a possibility but likely to occur.
Think about it: We now know that rumors abound that the Red Hen is in financial trouble, that they have partnered with a pedophile investor, that there have been suspicions of hard drug use, drug running, human trafficking and prostitution. Even if most or all of these rumors are unfounded, they raise the question:
Could there be an upside to adding to this pile of dark rumors a fresh set of self-inflicted PR disasters?
There could be an upside if the final move Stephanie Wilkinson wants is something like an arson attack on the property. If she is in financial trouble or for whatever reason wishes to get out from under the Red Hen, a big, fat case of insurance fraud might be the perfect hatchling for her financial future.
Wilkinson could even be planning to torch her own property, safe in the knowledge that it can now easily be blamed on "extremists" who have reacted so negatively to Wilkinson's chasing the young family out of Lexington.
Maybe the property and business insurance providers should be taking a fresh look at those policies, and the local law enforcement should be on alert for more fishy business coming out of the Red Hen Lexington.
