The ETs are doing things that would trigger public outrage if they were known.

Someone cut a deal with ETs to get "cool things" (tech?) in exchange for something. ETs were at war with humans, but the humans didn't realize it. Didn't realize the value of the exchange.

Why didn't leaders object to what the ETs are doing?

What is happening to humans now was based on a deal some 70 years ago w/ ETs. Meetings between US President and multiple species of ETs. Some ETs were warning humans not to strike a deal w/ the other ETs. Now many regret the deal.
