The Lord Jesus is talking with Moses who came down from receiving the law on Mount Sinai 1400 years earlier with his face shining from having been in his presence in that moment. The one that many thought was the Old Testament prophet Elijah, the Lord Jesus. He's talking with Elijah whom he had stashed away in a whirlwind with chariots of or horses of chariots and horses of fire some 800 years earlier.
So here the Messiah is talking with the two men who represent the law and the prophets. And what was the subject? Luke 9 31 says their subject was his departure which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. If you had been a witness to this event, how would you have responded?
Maybe your heart would have been beating out of your chest. Maybe you would have been, your adrenaline would have been racing. You would have been struggling to breathe.
Well, Peter spins, which is funny because the scripture says he didn't know what to say. He was terrified. He didn't know what to say. It would have been a good time for him to be quiet. Somebody has said, never miss an opportunity to shut up, but Peter just had to say something and in doing so he wasn't just inserting comments into some casual conversation. He was interjecting himself into the pivotal frame of time and eternity, his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.
And he said something really profound. It's good that we're here. Of course, it was good. They were there, Jesus took them there, Moses and Elijah talking about the cross. Peter interrupts the conversation and as he builds up steam, he says, you know, let, let's do this. Let's build three booths, three tabernacles like let's just establish the kingdom right here on the spot.
