also: a sinner is required to do penance and feel the remorse for what they have done, making it right.
when Christianity was new many people would wait until their death bed to be baptized believing that they would then enter Heaven without sin, because baptism does the same thing: absolves sin.
so that is is. And right or wrong, people have a sense of if the person has not reformed themself, then no matter what a pope says, the person is still under that odious weight.

anon, I wrote a lot more than what I posted to you. I base what I said upon two books that I have recently reviewed (I didn't read through them cover to cover) about the Sacrament of Confession.
I can find them and give you the authors and titles, if you would like.
but you saying I'm brainwashed and butthurt makes me think that you really don't care about the history of the Sacrament of Confession. I was surprised to learn some new things about it.
but what I feel is that if you feel the remorse for your sin, and have made good, telling a priest isn't always necessary. In fact priest really only want to hear the really bad stuff, the serious stuff.

there are different ways to get the contrition necessary, and forgiving people is also part of that.
in your case you're probably paid here to do your anti-religious shilling and probably feel no remorse for what you do.
