A week or so ago, cyberphilosopher/poet/essayist/songwriter/political activist John Perry Barlow posted on Facebook: “I was dead for about 8 mins. on Wed. eve. total cardiac arrest. Hard to relax & sleep now. And sad to report, no Ascending Light.”
That’s a grabber. I found him at CPMC, the latest in a series of five hospitals in which he’d been treated in six weeks, after a series of illnesses that included a staph infection and nine surgeries. “There are 150,000 iatrogenic deaths in the United States every year,” he said, referring to conditions resulting from medical treatment. They are “the third leading cause of death in the United States,” he said, but half the people in the first hospital in which he was treated “had never heard of the word.”
Anyway, he was recovering from a staph infection and surgery on May 27, when “I had a massive myocardial infarction and flatlined for eight minutes,” said Barlow, who’s prone to using the Internet to keep a large group of followers and fans up to date with his projects and thoughts. He’s perfectly lucid, as his FB postings — which have scores of get-well comments — demonstrated. So how did his brain get enough oxygen? “I guess it doesn’t use very much,” he said.
Complaining about the absence of that light, and also “no angels, cherubim, seraphim,” Barlow says death was “really a bummer.” He woke up realizing that the defibrillating paddles had “burned the crap out of my chest.” He had gone “down the tunnel of eternity and it turned out to be a cheap carnival ride.” He paused for a moment. “Probably not cheap, though.”
He’s hoping to get well quick enough to work on his latest project, which has to do with creating drinking water. Does he consider himself on the mend? “I keep thinking I am. The bottom line is that despite the fact that initial findings do not necessarily indicate the highway to heaven is out the back of your head, I don’t feel any less inclined to think that’s there.” (Barlow’s sentences are not simple.) “I told Weir about it,” he said, referring to close friend and co-songwriter Bob Weir. “He said, ‘You weren’t dead enough.’”
