The wife of the CEO of OceanGate, who was piloting the missing Titanic tourist submersible, is descended from a wealthy New York couple who drowned on the Titanic when the famed ship hit an iceberg in 1912.

Wendy Rush is the wife of Stockton Rush, one of the five people trapped in a Titan sub that went missing Sunday after a trip to visit the Titanic wreckage.

Crews are now racing to try and find the missing sub in a massive international rescue effort.

Wendy's great-great-grandparents, Isidor and Ida Straus, died in the 1912 disaster.

Isidor is a co-founder of Macy's department store. He and his wife were featured in James Cameron's 1997 film about the disaster as the two fictionalized versions were shown embraced on a better as water rushed into the ship and around them.

The pair had in real life been offered seats on a lifeboat - her as a woman, and him as a well-known former congressman and co-owner of Macy's department store. But Isidor refused, saying he would not go until all the women and children had gone, and Ida then refused to go without her husband of 40 years.

She gave her mink coat to her maid, Ellen Bird, to keep her warm as she sailed away on the lifeboat.

Wendy Rush, born Wendy Hollings Weil, married engineer and entrepreneur Stockton Rush in 1986.

She is descended from Isidor and Ida Straus's daughter Minnie, who married Dr. Richard Weil in 1905.

Their son, Richard Weil Jr., later served as president of Macy's New York, and his son, Dr. Richard Weil III, is Wendy Rush's father, The New York Times reported.

Wendy Rush has visited the Titanic wreckage three times with her husband's company in the last two years, and works as OceanGate's communications director.

Stockton Rush, 61, founded OceanGate in 2009.

The Seattle-born, Princeton-educated aeronautical engineer worked on fighter jets and initially hoped to go to Mars before switching his attention to the sea.

The Obama family has been spotted visiting the Acropolis in Athens - with the former president cozying up to his wife.

Barack Obama, 61, was pictured caressing his wife's buttocks during the visit to the ancient site on Wednesday.

The former first lady wore a flattering khaki jumpsuit and white cardigan, with her husband looking relaxed in white chinos, trainers and a casual blue shirt.

The loved-up couple were joined by their two daughters Malia, 24, and Sasha, 22.

Malia was sporting a long brown dress and black ankle boots, and Sasha trainers, jeans and a purple top paired with hoop earrings.

The Obama family is in Greece for an Obama Foundation event and appears to have taken some downtime to see the popular attraction.

The Foundation is hosting 100 changemakers from across Africa, Asia-Pacific and Europe for a week-long leadership and cultural experience in Athens.

'During the week, Leaders are exchanging ideas, workshopping solutions, and building meaningful connections' the Foundation's website states.

Barack Obama has spent time with the attendees, 'listening to the challenges leaders face and learning about the opportunities to advance their work.'

Other downtime has included an evening of traditional Greek experiences at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center.

In a tweet posted to his account on Tuesday the former President said 'Michelle and I started the @ObamaFoundation to support the next generation of leaders creating sustainable change in their communities.

The Titan was a novel about The Titanic

The Wreck of the Titan: Or, Futility

Futility is a novella written by Morgan Robertson andpublished first during 1898. It was revised as The Wreck of the Titan in 1912. It features a fictional British ocean liner named Titan that sinks in the North Atlantic Ocean after striking an iceberg. The Titan and its sinking are famous for similarities to the passenger ship RMS Titanic and its sinking 14 years later. After the sinking of the Titanic the novel was reissued with some changes, particularly to the ship's displacement.

Plot

The first half of Futility introduces the Titan, described as the longest and fastest ship in the world that is also considered unsinkable and hero John Rowland, a disgraced former US Navy officer who was dismissed from the service. Now an alcoholic, he works as a deckhand on the Titan.

One night, while sailing between America and Ireland, the Titan crashes into a smaller ship at full speed in fog, splitting it in half. Rowland, who witnessed the collision while on lookout is offered a bribe by the captain for his silence, but refuses and vows to expose the deed once in port. The captain and the officers attempt to discredit Rowland's testimony by drugging him.

The next night, the ship hits an iceberg and capsizes, and only 13 people survive. Rowland saves the young daughter of a former lover by jumping onto the iceberg with her. The pair find a lifeboat washed up on the iceberg, and Rowland also fights and kills an attacking polar bear. They are rescued eventually by a passing ship and brought back to England.

Back in England, Rowland tells of the events of the voyage, including the destruction of the smaller ship, the attempted cover-up and drugging by the captain and officers (who have also survived) and the ordeal on the iceberg to an insurance underwriter responsible for insuring both ships. Rowland refuses to testify before court and instead goes to New York with the girl.

Once there, the girl is recovered by her mother and Rowland is arrested for her kidnapping. A sympathetic magistrate discharges him and rebukes the mother for being unsympathetic to her daughter's savior. Rowland then begins living alone.

In a brief final chapter covering several years, Rowland progresses from homeless and largely anonymous fisherman to a desk job and finally, two years after passing a civil service exam, to "a lucrative position under the Government".

A later edition[clarification needed] includes a followup: Rowland receives a letter from the mother (who congratulates him and pleads for him to visit her) and from the girl.

Similarities to the Titanic

Although the novel was written before the RMS Titanic was even conceptualized, there are some uncanny similarities between the fictional and real-life versions. Like the Titanic, the fictional ship sank after wrecking on an iceberg in April in the North Atlantic Ocean, and there were not enough lifeboats for all the passengers. The Titan would have survived a head-on collision with the iceberg, but a glancing encounter did more extensive damage. There are also similarities in size (800 ft [244 m] long for the Titan versus 882 ft 9 in [269 m] long for the Titanic), speed, and life-saving equipment. After the Titanic's sinking, some people credited Robertson with precognition and clairvoyance, which he denied. Scholars attribute the similarities to Robertson's extensive knowledge of shipbuilding and maritime trends.
