I imagine that we are in the matrix searching for the way out knowing very well that the world around us is not real. Not much that happens in this world makes sense anymore. There is no way to determine what is real and what is not; discernment and independent thinking is not enough to find the door that leads to the way out.

So when does the white rabbit lead us to the door we're supposed to walk through?
