Popular Pesticide Faulted for Frogs' Sexual Abnormalities

Scientists from the Environmental Protection Agency say there is sufficient evidence to conclude that the country's most widely used pesticide, atrazine, causes sexual abnormality in frogs.

They are recommending that the agency conduct more research to understand atrazine's mechanisms and its broader impact on frog populations.

 

A correction was made on June 21, 2003: An article on Thursday about research on effects of a popular pesticide, atrazine, misstated the assessments of E.P.A. scientists about the chemical's effects on frogs. The scientists said that there was sufficient evidence that atrazine might cause sexual abnormality in frogs – not that it actually does so. The article also misstated the location of the University of Guelph, where Glen Van der Kraak, who commented, is a professor. It is in Guelph, Ontario, not Winnipeg, Manitoba.
