First Openly Transgender State Legislator in New Hampshire Arrested for Distributing “Child Sexual Abuse Images”
On Thursday, former state Rep. Stacie Marie Laughton was arrested for distributing images depicting child sexual abuse. According to UnionLeader.com:
On Tuesday, June 20, Nashua police responded to a local facility for a juvenile matter, officials said in a release. Officers spoke with individuals there who indicated Laughton allegedly distributed sexually explicit images of children, police said.
Detectives from the Special Investigations Division applied for and were granted a warrant for Laughton’s arrest. She was arrested Thursday with distribution of child sexual abuse images. She was also charged with three additional counts of distribution of child sexual abuse images, Nashua police said.
The first openly transgender person elected to the New Hampshire House of Representatives and perhaps the country, Laughton, quickly resigned the seat shortly after the 2012 victory when a felony conviction from 2008 came to light. Laughton was convicted on conspiracy to commit credit card fraud and was forbidden from holding public office until 2018 when the suspended sentence ended.Â
Laughton was also convicted of calling in a hoax bomb threat at the Southern NH Medical Center in 2015 and was admitted to a mental health and addiction treatment facility in lieu of a suspended six-month sentence. In addition to the recent arrest for distributing “child sex abuse images”, the disgraced former Rep. was also arrested in September 2022 and again in November 2022 for violating a protective order. Â

3M settles water contamination lawsuits with $10.3B payout
Thousands of lawsuits have been filed against companies citing water supply and ground contamination.
Chemical manufacturing company 3M agreed to settle multiple lawsuits with a $10.3 billion payout over the U.S. water supply being allegedly contaminated with "forever chemicals" contained in firefighting foam and other products, the company announced in a press release on Thursday.Â
Under the settlement, 3M will provide the payout over a 13-year period to both public water suppliers that have found traces of Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and other suppliers that "may detect PFAS at any level in the future." The company did not admit liability in the settlement.Â
PFAS are a class of thousands of chemicals that are widely used throughout the globe in consumer products like cookware, food packaging, clothing and more. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has dubbed them an "urgent public health and environmental issue" as research has linked them to increased risk of cancer, developmental delays in kids, and more.
Stuart, Florida, sued 3M in 2018 claiming the firefighting foams it made or sold contained PFAS and had entered into the soil and water supply. According to Reuters, 3M and companies like it have had over 4,000 lawsuits against them along the same lines.
A top lawyer representing water suppliers against 3M said the settlement is the largest of its kind in American history. The money "will be used to help filter PFAS from drinking water that is served to the public," and will provide millions of citizens with PFA-free drinking water.
