#OTD in 1944, USS Texas (BB-35) bombarded Battery Hamburg near Cherbourg, France. A tumbling German 240mm projectile smashed through the port side of the ship but failed to detonate. The projectile was covered with mattresses until being defused when Texas returned to England.
