The US would like to see the Wagner group disbanded and cease operations around the world, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said.

 

Miller added that the United States will seek the extradition of Prigozhin if he ends up in a country with which there is an extradition agreement, but Belarus is not one of them.

 

Miller also said that Washington's contacts with the Russian authorities on the situation with the Prigozhin rebellion were conducted not only through US Ambassador Lynn Tracy, but also at "other levels here in Washington."

 

He explained that during the talks, the American side "delivered two messages":

1) we expect Russia to fulfill its obligations to protect the embassy and ensure the safety of diplomatic personnel;

2) they assured their Russian colleagues that they had nothing to do with the rebellion and that they considered what was happening to be an internal affair of Russia.

 

The White House called contacts with Russia over the weekend "good and direct," adding that it expects them to continue.

 

In turn, US President Joe Biden said that in light of the Wagner rebellion, he instructed his national security team to "report" to him hourly on the situation in Russia and prepare for various scenarios.

 

Biden stressed that the United States and its allies are not involved in the latest events in Russia, and the attempted rebellion is "a struggle within the Russian system."
