By law, the Legislature must approve and the governor must sign a budget before July 1, the start of California’s fiscal year.
Otherwise, the state can’t pay its expenses, such as salaries or some vendor payments.
Newsom and legislative leaders announced they had a deal on June 26, the night before the deadline for the governor to sign, veto or line-item veto the budget bill passed by the Legislature.
The votes on the budget bills are expected by June 30.
