The rule for using a/an isn't whether it starts with a vowel,
but whether the word is pronounced with a sound of a vowel.

The rule for using a/an isn't whether it starts with a vowel,
but whether the word is pronounced with a sound of a vowel.
For example, the word union starts with a vowel, but is pronounce with 'y' sound, so it's a union, not an union. Can't think of a converse example right now, but you get the picture.
