As dangerous heat and humidity smothered parts of the South and Midwest on Thursday, local governments and charities worked to protect poor and elderly residents by opening cooling stations and delivering donated air conditioners.
In Florida, where heat index levels of up to 112 degrees (44 Celsius) are forecast over the next several days, the Christian Service Center set up an “extreme heat cooling center” in Orlando for homeless people and others who don’t have access to air conditioning.
“You or I complain about the heat or have to deal with it as we walk from our car to the grocery store or from our car to the air-conditioned office, but for the people we see here on campus, they wake up to that every day,” Bryan Hampton of the Christian Service Center told WESH-TV.

Wildfire smoke drives traditional summer camp activities indoors
The Canadian wildfires that have shrouded much of the nation in smoky haze are making it much harder for American kids to enjoy one of the staples of summer camp: fresh country air.
As a result, many camps in the Midwest and the East have been moving activities indoors, seeking advice from medical professionals and hoping the air quality improves soon so campers can get back to hiking, playing tetherball and waging games of capture the flag.
“There’s certainly a concern, considering that we take children from the cities,” Mark Zides, chairman of the Pennsylvania Camp Association, said Thursday. “Coming up to the mountains for the summer is what summer camp is all about.”

The French government deployed over 40,000 police and gendarmes around the country on Thursday, including elite counter-terrorism and tactical units, after rioters infuriated by the death of a 17-year-old pizza delivery driver torched a bank and attacked a prison.
Paris and its inner suburbs were fortified with an additional 5,000 officers, the Interior Ministry told French media. Members of the National Gendarmerie Intervention Group (GIGN), the Investigation and Intervention Brigade (BRI) and the Inquest Assistance Intervention Deterrence (RAID) tactical unit have been spotted in Nanterre, where the riots first began.
The community northwest of Paris is where two officers pulled over the teen, later identified as Nahel M., on Tuesday morning. When the yellow Mercedes with Polish license plates started to drive off, one of the officers fired through the driver’s side window, killing Nahel.
More than 6,000 people marched through Nanterre on Thursday, heeding the call for “vengeance” issued by Nahel’s mother, Mounia, on social media. The demonstration ended in clashes with police. By 9pm local time, a Credit Mutuelle bank branch in the town was looted and set on fire.
