Pool Report #1

President with members of Congress in Cabinet Room

When the pool entered, members of Congress were already seated at the table. The president opened his remarks commenting on the Supreme Court ruling on his travel ban. He also returned to that at the end of the session, after going around the room and hearing from all the members as well as from OMB Director Mulvaney.

He also took a few questions from the pool. He described the ruling as pretty much the final word. Asked if he will go ahead and implement the ban, he responded, Of course. He strongly defended his tariffs, saying other countries are now coming to the table because of them. Without tariffs, you would never do that. He said, Were the bank that everybody wants to steal from and plunder. He accused Harley Davidson of using the tariffs as an excuse to move overseas. They are, he said, using that as an excuse. I dont like that. Ive been very good to Harley. Noting Mexicos trade surplus with the United States, he said, I call that profit. He added that there is a tremendous amount of money being taken out of our country. He cited the days of tariffs before the income tax, recalling President McKinley. You didnt need any income tax, he said. Of the tariffs, he said, Were doing the right thing 100 percent. Citing the imbalance with China, he said, Thats not free trade; thats stupid trade. Asked about the stories that the administration will announce new curbs on Chinese investment in American tech companies, he said, We are a very smart country. He mocked the stories by Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal, questioning their sources. It was a bad leakprobably just made up. He added, A lot of time, leaks arent leaks. Theyre just made up by the writer.

Here is what he said at the opening:

Thank you very much everybody. You have probably all seen, otherwise you wouldnt be a the top of your game, the fact that todays Supreme Court ruling just coming out, a tremendous success, a tremendous victory of the American people and for our Constitution, a great victory for our Constitution. We have to be tough and we have to be safe and we have to be secure. At a minimum we have to make sure that we vet people coming into the country, that we know who is coming in, we know where they are coming from. We just have to know whos coming here. The ruling shows that all of the attacks from the media and the Democrat politicians, all turned out to be very wrong. And what were looking for as Republicans I can tell you is strong borders, no crime. What the Democrats are looking for is open borders, which will bring tremendous crime. It will bring MS-13 and lots of others that we dont want to have in our country. So I will always be defending the sovereignty, the safety and the security of the American people. Thats who I was put here. Were discussing here today the funding of the wall, which we very much need. We started the wall. Were spending a lot of energy and a lot of time and started up in San Diego and other places, its under construction now. We worked with $1.6 billion dollars. But were going to ask for an increase in wall spending so we can finish it quicker. It stops the drugs, it stops people that we dont want to have and it gives us security and safety. And with that, we might just take a quick spin around the room

THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 26, 2018

Presidential Message for the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

Today, on the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, we remember those we have lost to the drug abuse epidemic, lift up and pray for those struggling with addiction, and reaffirm our steadfast resolve to dismantle the criminal networks that spread the drugs that are poisoning our loved ones.

In 2016, opioids were involved in the overdose deaths of 116 Americans on average each day. An increasing number of opioid overdose deaths involve fentanyl and other highly potent synthetic opioids, which are flowing across our borders. The criminals who traffic these substances into our communities present a threat to public safety and national security. Over the past several years, trafficking by transnational criminal networks and cartels has contributed to a deadly drug overdose crisis and a rise in violent crimes.

My Administration is aggressively cracking down on these illicit trafficking networks and working with our international partners to bring swift justice to these criminals wherever they operate. In 2017, Customs and Border Protection seized over 1,100 pounds of fentanylnearly three times the amount seized in 2016. In addition, last year, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested criminal aliens with over 76,000 charges and convictions for dangerous drug crimes, and the Department of Justice prosecuted more than 3,000 defendants for opioid-related crimes.

This year, my Administration is expanding its efforts to combat drug demand and the opioid crisis through the Initiative to Stop Opioid Abuse and Reduce Drug Supply and Demand. As a part of this initiative, we are dedicating more resources to educating Americans about the dangers of opioids and other drugs. We are also interrupting the supply of illicit narcotics by cracking down on illicit drug supply chains that are devastating American communities. Further, we are redoubling our efforts to save lives by expanding access to evidence-based treatment and recovery support services. We have worked with Congress to secure at least $6 billion in new funding in 2018 and 2019 for these and other lifesaving efforts.

Today, we harden our resolve to bring justice to drug traffickers and ultimately to end the scourge of drug abuse. Together, with our partners at home and abroad, we will save lives and restore hope for families plagued by the devastation of drug addiction.

The only puzzling aspect of this decision is that it wasn’t unanimous. The law 1952 law couldn’t more clear.
